Position Overview:

The City of Falls Church's Department of Public Works (DPW) is seeking a dedicated full-time Automotive Maintenance Technician II to join its fleet division.

This role involves performing skilled maintenance and repair tasks on a diverse range of the City's motor vehicles, including public works and construction vehicles and equipment.

Responsibilities are communicated through work orders detailing the issues or services required.

The incumbent will assess repair needs and execute maintenance services under the general oversight of the Vehicle Maintenance Supervisor, with additional support from the Mechanic III.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Conduct diagnostic evaluations and inspect City-owned motor equipment to identify necessary maintenance or repairs.
  • Prepare clear work orders for mechanics, outlining repair instructions for tasks to be completed.
  • Provide user agencies with accurate time and cost estimates for required services.
  • Monitor the progress of work and ensure user agencies are updated on any changes in cost or schedule.
  • Utilize the City's fleet management system to track motor equipment service history.
  • Identify repair work that may need to be outsourced due to workload, limited resources, or cost considerations.
  • Coordinate the completion of work and address issues related to faulty repairs or billing discrepancies.
  • Establish and maintain schedules for preventive maintenance and State inspections.
  • Perform hands-on repairs and maintenance on City-owned motor vehicles as necessary.
  • Manage the registration of new vehicles with the State, including titles, tags, and registration.
  • Act as interim Supervisory Auto Mechanic during absences as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong understanding of standard practices, procedures, tools, and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of light and heavy vehicles.
  • Familiarity with occupational safety standards and practices in automotive service and repair.
  • Knowledge of operational principles and methods for repairing gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Proficiency in using tools, materials, and equipment for motor vehicle and machinery service and repair.
  • Ability to perform repairs and adjustments and conduct maintenance services effectively.
  • Capability to diagnose and resolve automotive mechanical and electrical issues.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks that may require significant physical effort.
  • Proficient in reading and writing in English.

Qualifications:
Minimum Requirements:
  • Completion of high school or trade school-level courses in automotive maintenance and repair.
  • At least one year of experience in motor equipment repair at the level of Automotive Mechanic I, or an equivalent combination of experience and training.
  • Possession of a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with the appropriate endorsement for the vehicle being operated.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Five years of experience in automotive and emergency response vehicle maintenance, including both preventive and corrective maintenance across various systems.
  • Certifications in ASE (both automotive and medium/heavy truck) and EVT (both fire apparatus and ambulance).

Work Schedule:

This is a full-time position, operating Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.


Compensation and Benefits:

Salary ranges from $54,510 to $73,589 based on qualifications.
