LEAD ELECTRICAL SYSTEMS ENGINEER (STARLINK)

SpaceX is utilizing its extensive experience in aerospace to advance Starlink, the most sophisticated broadband internet system globally. We are just beginning to realize the vast potential of Starlink's global impact, and as we continue to enhance and expand our constellation, we seek exceptional engineers to join our ranks.

As a Lead Electrical Systems Engineer for Starlink, you will have full responsibility for the hardware that facilitates this connectivity, working at the intersection of electrical, mechanical, thermal analysis, software, and antenna engineering. Within our Redmond facility, various sub-teams focus on different aspects of Starlink hardware engineering. These areas include high-speed digital communication, network system integration, power systems, RF systems, avionics, network computing, power electronics, failure analysis, and testing automation. Your specific team assignment will be determined during the interview process based on your technical expertise and preferences. Sub-teams include:

  • Satellite Payload: Design and implementation of RF systems, high-speed digital communication, and high-density power conversion hardware.
  • Satellite Bus and Avionics: Development and testing of space-hardened avionics hardware.
  • Gateways: Design and testing of electronics for the largest network of ground stations, ensuring seamless data transfer between satellites and end-users.
  • Hardware Test and Factory Automation: Validation and testing from initial concept to full-scale production.
  • Failure Analysis: Conducting root cause analysis of production issues to enhance product quality.
  • On-Orbit Reliability: Monitoring satellite electronics health in orbit, leading investigations, and replicating findings in the lab.
  • Enterprise & Government: Providing top-tier solutions for large-scale operations in aviation, maritime, and defense sectors.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Design, develop, and test highly reliable electronics for satellite communication.
  • Assess third-party electrical and design integration solutions for Starlink's reliable operation.
  • Collaborate with software, mechanical, thermal, and manufacturing teams.
  • Lead system trades, requirements capture, component selection, analysis, schematic capture, PCB layout, prototyping, hardware bring-up, debugging, documentation, manufacturing, and testing of complex electrical designs.
  • Engage hands-on in supporting hardware through production, satellite integration, and flight.
  • Work closely with engineers from various disciplines to deliver integrated, high-performance hardware.
  • Drive continuous improvements in designs by developing tools to analyze data from orbit and lab experiments.
  • Challenge existing assumptions and seek straightforward solutions to complex challenges.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or computer engineering.
  • 10+ years of experience in designing circuits, electronic products, or hardware (internship and project experience included).

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Master's degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or a related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in rapidly designing and delivering reliable products.
  • 2+ years of experience in full life cycle development of new hardware products.
  • 2+ years of experience in designing and implementing mixed-signal circuit boards from concept to production.
  • 2+ years of experience in testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronics.
  • Strong understanding of computers and programming languages (Python, C/C++).
  • Proven ability to work in a highly collaborative role.
  • 2+ years of experience in aerospace systems.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Willingness to work extended hours or weekends as necessary for critical deadlines.
  • Some roles may require being on-call on a rotational basis.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS:

Pay range: Electrical Design Engineer/Lead: $170,000 - $250,000 annually. Your actual level and base salary will be determined based on job-related knowledge, skills, education, and experience.

Base salary is just one component of your total rewards package at SpaceX. You may also be eligible for long-term incentives, including company stock options, discretionary bonuses, and participation in an Employee Stock Purchase Plan. Comprehensive medical, vision, and dental coverage, a 401(k) retirement plan, short and long-term disability insurance, life insurance, paid parental leave, and various other discounts and perks are also included. You will accrue 3 weeks of paid vacation and be eligible for 10 or more paid holidays annually.
