Job Title: Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse

The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse is a vital member of our healthcare team, providing exceptional care to patients in the obstetrical unit. As a skilled and compassionate nurse, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality patient care, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams, and maintaining a safe and therapeutic environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide professional nursing care to patients in the labor and delivery unit, utilizing the nursing process and evidence-based practice.
  • Collaborate with physicians, surgical techs, and ancillary departments to ensure optimal patient care.
  • Document patient information and data in the medical record, maintaining accurate and timely records.
  • Respond to maternal and fetal complications/emergencies, initiating extra-uterine resuscitation when indicated.
  • Participate in continuing educational programs on obstetrical nursing, staying current with hospital, nursing, and unit required certifications and in-services.
Requirements:
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing and current licensure as a registered nurse by the Mississippi State Board of Nursing.
  • Current knowledge and skills appropriate to the age and type of patient population served.
  • Participation in continuing educational programs on obstetrical nursing.
  • Current Basic Life Support Certification (CPR), Neonatal Resuscitation Certification (NRP), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support Certification (ACLS).
Working Conditions:

The Labor and Delivery Registered Nurse works in a fast-paced, dynamic environment, requiring strong communication and interpersonal skills. The nurse must be able to manage stress, make decisions under pressure, and work independently with concentration and memory to detail.

The nurse may be required to stand for long periods, lift patients and equipment, and use fine motor skills for tasks such as venous punctures and sterile vaginal exams. The nurse must be able to communicate effectively with patients, families, and healthcare teams, using verbal and non-verbal communication skills.

The nurse must be able to work effectively in a team environment, collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to provide optimal patient care. The nurse must also be able to maintain a safe and therapeutic environment, adhering to policies and procedures of the unit, department, and facility.

The nurse must be able to read and interpret monitor data, including fetal heart rate interpretation and uterine contraction interpretation. The nurse must also be able to describe fetal monitoring strips to physicians accurately and complete an annual Fetal Monitoring Course provided by the hospital.

The nurse must be able to maintain a level of supplies, equipment, and medication to meet the daily and emergency needs of patients. The nurse must also be able to coordinate the care of patients in the OR, including delegation of specific duties and supervision of surgical techs.

The nurse must be able to demonstrate accurate assessment of the patient's post-op cardiovascular, respiratory, and neurological status, including hemodynamic stability, airway management, and mental status evaluation. The nurse must also be able to manage the post-anesthesia patient according to discharge criteria and maintain competency of post-anesthesia recovery by recovering at least 6 patients per year.
