Job Summary:

Cal Poly Pomona Foundation is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Culinary Student Assistant to join our team. As a Culinary Student Assistant, you will work closely with our Chef to perform various tasks and duties within the kitchen. Your responsibilities will include assisting with documentation, research, experimentation, and testing of new products, as well as obtaining feedback on food and service quality.

Key Responsibilities:

Prepare menu items for breakfast, lunch, dinner, and late night following recipe standards.
Possess a working knowledge of daily menus.
Communicate menu items and ingredients to customers.
Keep accurate records of food production.
Possess knowledge of proper food handling and kitchen equipment operation.
Follow safety and health policies and procedures established by Foundation and CenterPointe.
Maintain cleanliness at assigned station throughout shift.
Advise management of operational problems and recommend potential solutions.
Assemble menu items according to recipe and serve assembled menu items to customers.
Trained to be competent at all culinary stations.
Train new employees to be proficient at each station.
Coach current and new employees to ensure employees maintain standards at assigned stations.

Requirements:

High School Diploma or equivalent general education degree (GED)
Sophomore or junior standing preferred.
Nutrition and culinary background
Mathematical experience a plus

Preferred Qualifications:

Organized and detailed
Ability to grasp technical concepts quickly
Ability to work under pressure and produce high volume and quick service.
Must be customer-oriented with good communication and organizational skills.
Ability to work in various stations, learning the use of spreadsheets, food prep equipment, including kitchen sanitation and safety standards
Highly detailed-orientation, able to work independently, multi-task enjoy interfacing with other staff at all levels to ensure
Physical requirements include standing for long periods; walking; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; corrected hearing and vision to normal range; clear verbal and written communication skills; reaching, some positions may require the lifting of up to 25 pounds.
Provide and receives open and honest feedback in a constructive manner
Ability to use food prep equipment using safe practices
Experienced with weights and volume measurements and conversions with food

Working Conditions:

The Culinary Student Assistant will work in a fast-paced kitchen environment with a team of experienced chefs and kitchen staff. The successful candidate will be required to work a variety of shifts, including mornings, afternoons, evenings, and weekends. The Culinary Student Assistant will be expected to maintain a high level of professionalism and attention to detail at all times, and to work effectively in a team environment.
