Job Details

Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse or physician, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) performs nursing duties in the care and treatment of patients on an assigned unit.

The LPN requires the use of tact and judgment in the care and treatment of patients, and may assist in the supervision of non-professional subordinates.

The LPN is expected to be cognizant of the philosophy, standards, objectives, and policies of the Nursing Department, and to perform related duties as required.

Job Requirements Overview

The LPN is responsible for demonstrating proficient knowledge in the treatment of patients requiring nursing care, and for using available diagnostic results and other information to make an accurate evaluation.

The LPN applies knowledge of illnesses, injuries, and diseases, and uses available resources in performing the nursing process.

The LPN performs timely, comprehensive, and accurate reevaluations and documentation at regular intervals as defined by the department, and contributes to an individualized and appropriate plan of care delineating measurable patient care goals.

The LPN contributes to the plan of care, making necessary changes as the condition of the patient indicates, and bases care decisions on resident needs and care priorities.

The LPN monitors patient outcomes, and is able to work in surroundings with a degree of dust, noise, etc. without undue discomfort.

The LPN is able to hear, talk, walk, stand, bend, and stretch, and is able to read, write, and interpret documents.

The LPN is able to sit for long periods of time at a desk to perform job functions, and is able to stand for long periods of time at required patient bedside and/or procedural areas.

The LPN is able to communicate effectively with patients and/or co-workers, and may be exposed to mechanical/electrical/radiant/explosive/burn and chemical hazards.

The LPN may be required to handle, dispose of, and/or identify hazardous waste and hazardous materials, and may be required to operate and clean equipment.

The LPN may be required to handle/assist in lifting patients onto/out of exam beds/procedure stations, and must be trained in and knowledgeable of all policies and procedures pertaining to hazardous waste and hazardous materials and maintain qualifications applicable to assigned work.

The LPN must demonstrate knowledge of all codes and demonstrate understanding.

Physical Requirements

The LPN performs duties routinely requiring exposure to blood, body fluid, and tissue.

The normal routine involves no exposure to blood, body fluid, or tissue, but potential for exposure.
