Job Summary:

Under the supervision of a senior technician, the Sterile Processing Technician II Certified will be responsible for following established infection control, quality assurance, and departmental policies and procedures. The incumbent will collect, clean, decontaminate, disinfect, and/or sterilize surgical instruments, trays, and packs, reusable medical devices, and patient care equipment for inpatient nursing and medical office departments.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Adhere to hand washing requirements, workflow patterns, standard precautions, sterility assurance, biological monitoring, and dress code.
  • Validate and maintain event-related protocols, disinfection and/or sterilization load parameters and records, inventory check sheet(s), and equipment monitoring.
  • Accurately document and maintain daily records of all QA and sterilization functions according to regulatory agency and Infection Control standards.
  • Participate in department employee orientation, meetings, and employee evaluation and competency programs.
  • Assist in departmental inservices and training.
  • Wear personal protective equipment and inspect, disassemble, sort, clean, and process reusable instrumentation and equipment.
  • Select and operate specialized cleaning equipment and follow manufacturer recommendations for use of cleaning agents.
  • Maintain adequate cleaning supplies and reprocess endoscopes as designated.
  • Identify, inspect, and assemble all general and specialty instruments, various power equipment, laser, and endoscopic instruments per specifications and manufacturer guidelines.
  • Select and prepare packaging materials for the sterilization of reusable medical devices.
  • Select appropriate method of sterilization and maintain accurate sterilization records.
  • Properly load and unload sterilization cart items and verify that sterilization parameters have been met before distribution of load.
  • Collect, clean, check, distribute, and track patient care equipment and report all malfunctioning equipment to appropriate department.
  • Demonstrate awareness of personal and work area safety at all times and comply with facility safety policies and procedures.
  • Actively support and contribute teamwork in the workplace and take responsibility and accountability for own professional work ethics.
Requirements:
  • One year experience in instrument processing.
  • Knowledge of Medical Terminology to understand instrumentation, surgical procedures, and surgical schedule.
  • Knowledge of various types of reusable surgical instrumentation, including power equipment and micro surgical instrumentation.
  • Ability to read and comprehend complex instructions, correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.
  • Must be able to follow verbal and written instructions and read, comprehend, and follow organizational and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills with co-workers, internal, and external customers.
Education:
  • High School Diploma/GED.
  • Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution - Ambulatory Surgery Technician Certification OR Instrument Specialist Certificate OR Registered Central Service Technician Certificate OR Certification Board for Sterile Processing and Distribution - Technician Certification OR Flex Endoscope Reprocessor Certificate OR Surgical Instrument Processor Certificate.
