Language and Communication Specialist

Location: Urbana School District 116

Supervisor: Assistant Superintendent for Special Services

Job Overview: The Language and Communication Specialist is responsible for delivering direct therapy in speech and language to students, as well as providing consultation to IEP team members. This role focuses on assisting children who demonstrate challenges in speech and/or language skills that significantly impact their educational experience.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Implement a screening initiative for students in early education, new enrollees, and those referred for services.
  • Conduct assessments and provide diagnoses for children requiring intervention.
  • Create a timetable for delivering speech and language therapy across various domains.
  • Engage in the formulation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs).
  • Deliver progress updates to parents/guardians and educational staff.
  • Collaborate with teachers, parents, and support personnel.
  • Facilitate training sessions on speech and language strategies.
  • Maintain comprehensive records of speech and language interventions.
  • Oversee case management for students with primary speech and language challenges.
  • Assist in the procurement of necessary materials and refer families to community resources.
  • Participate in the Medicaid reimbursement initiative.
  • Execute additional assigned responsibilities as needed.
Qualifications:

Education:
  • Master's Degree in Speech/Language Pathology.
Experience:
  • Preferred two years of experience in a school setting.
  • Certificate of Clinical Competence (CCC) is preferred.
Skills and Attributes:
  • Strong organizational abilities.
  • Exceptional communication and teamwork skills.
  • Innovative problem-solving capabilities.
Licenses/Certification: Must hold a valid license from the ISBE and IDFPR as a Speech Language Pathologist.

Employment Terms: 185-day contract, member of the UEA. Compensation is based on educational background, experience, and contractual agreements.

Evaluation Process: Conducted by the Building Principal or Assistant Superintendent for Student Services.
