Job Overview

PRIMARY FUNCTIONS

This position involves skilled mechanical work at the journeyman level focused on the maintenance and repair of gasoline and diesel engines, as well as heavy machinery and construction vehicles. The individual in this role will be tasked with performing skilled repair operations on trucks, passenger vehicles, and heavy equipment, including payloaders, excavators, tractors, rollers, low-bed trailers, graders, refuse vehicles, and street sweepers.

Tasks are assigned through verbal instructions or general written directives from a supervisor. The quality of work is assessed through testing and the operational status of the equipment post-repair.

SHIFTS

1st shift: 7:00am - 3:30pm

2nd shift: 3:00pm - 11:00pm

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conducts general overhaul and repair tasks on light and heavy trucks, including gasoline and diesel engines, and other automotive and mechanical apparatus; performs repairs and replacements on shock absorbers, brakes, and transmissions; adjusts clutches; checks and balances wheels for proper alignment; repairs and installs hydraulic systems.
  • Tunes engines utilizing standard diagnostic equipment.
  • Performs diverse electrical work on automotive machinery, such as installing batteries and terminals, adjusting lights, and repairing generators and starters.
  • Conducts road tests to identify operational defects in equipment and verifies repair work before returning equipment to service; employs various common testing devices such as ammeters, volt meters, and gauges.
  • Assists in the inspection and replacement of components in complex gasoline and diesel engines, including valves, pistons, main bearings, transmissions, and power takeoff systems.
  • Engages in repair work that requires the use of electric arc, acetylene, MIG, TIG, and stick welding equipment, including straightening chassis and bumpers, and hardfacing shovel teeth and grader blades.
  • Maintains daily logs of equipment repairs.
  • Performs related duties as necessary.

EDUCATION, QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

High school graduation is required, along with 1 to 3 years of experience as a full trade-level automotive mechanic, or an equivalent combination of experience and training that provides the necessary knowledge, abilities, and skills.

KNOWLEDGE, EXPERIENCE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Ability to recognize, diagnose, locate, and repair defects in automotive and diesel machinery.
  • Familiarity with standard practices and tools of the automotive mechanic profession.
  • Understanding of the operational principles of gasoline and diesel engines and mechanical repair methods applicable to heavy trucks and construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of electrical vehicle maintenance.
  • Awareness of occupational hazards and safety protocols in the trade.
  • Ability to comprehend and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in diagnosing defects in mechanical and electrical components of automotive equipment.
  • Capability to adapt tools and repair parts to specific issues.
  • Proficiency in locating and adjusting defects in automotive machinery.
  • Skill in the use and maintenance of tools utilized in automotive repair and adjustment tasks.
  • Competence in using a computer, including diagnostic software and online ordering tools.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must possess and maintain a valid State of Connecticut driver's license.
  • Employee must obtain a CDL with Air Brake Endorsement within 12 months of employment.
  • Upon successful completion of one year of service and possession of a CDL, a Mechanic B will advance to Mechanic A.
