Position Overview: The PreOp/PACU RN plays a crucial role in providing comprehensive patient care through the nursing process, adhering to medical guidelines and organizational standards. This position involves delivering safe, effective, and patient-family focused care throughout the perioperative experience for diverse patient populations.

Preoperative Responsibilities:
  • Facilitate the admission process for patients entering the preoperative department.
  • Conduct thorough health assessments to confirm patient readiness and verify identification wristbands.
  • Ensure all operative and informed consent documents are completed and accurate.
  • Identify the designated surgeon and the specific procedure scheduled.
  • Record and monitor vital signs to confirm patient stability prior to surgery.
  • Initiate intravenous access and provide patients with information regarding the upcoming procedure and attending medical personnel.
PACU Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate patients' conditions post-surgery to ensure recovery is progressing as expected.
  • Monitor vital signs and maintain records of all findings in patient files.
  • Address patient inquiries and ensure comfort during the recovery phase.
  • Oversee intravenous therapy and ensure all relevant medications are administered appropriately.
  • Develop personalized care plans tailored to each patient's specific needs.
  • Ensure compliance with individual patient care plans during nursing activities.
  • Observe for any changes in patient conditions and communicate findings to the physician.
  • Implement educational programs for patients and families regarding procedures and medications.
  • Assess when patients are ready for transfer to their recovery rooms.
  • Respond to post-operative emergencies with appropriate interventions.
  • Document sedation levels and body temperature accurately.
  • Manage blood and fluid transfusions and collect laboratory specimens as needed.
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitation in the post-operative area.
  • Change dressings and care for surgical wounds as required.

Qualifications:
  • Must possess a valid Registered Nurse license without restrictions in the state.

  • Current certifications in BLS, ACLS, and PALS are mandatory.

  • Ability to adapt swiftly to changing patient conditions is crucial.
  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills with staff, patients, and physicians are necessary.
