Job Summary:
The Senior Safety Specialist plays a critical role in developing and executing the safety component of an Environmental, Safety, and Health (ES&H) program. This involves administrative and field tasks per established industry practices, procedures, and regulatory and Bechtel requirements.
Key Responsibilities:
- Executes assignments involving significant safety and health issues and risks, using judgment and experience in the application of scientific techniques and plans to reduce the potential for adverse impacts.
- Integrates safety and health requirements into proposals, planning documents, design, construction, commissioning and startup, operations, schedules, procurement, and subcontract documents.
- Interprets requirements and provides technical assistance within ES&H teams and to other project groups regarding risk and hazard assessment, plan preparation, and ES&H program execution.
- Researches issues and regulatory requirements, performs studies and risk assessments, and prepares documentation and reports.
- Performs safety studies, risk assessments, and other safety and health reviews.
- Drafts and helps implement the project Safety and Health Management Plan, associated plans and procedures, and training program.
- Helps establish emergency preparedness and performs incident investigations.
- Helps identify stakeholders and resolve their concerns.
- Provides input to other project groups, so that safety and health requirements are integrated within project planning, design, construction plans, procurement, and subcontracts.
- Participates in meetings, as required, with customers, project team members, and contractors/subcontractors to advise them of safety and health requirements.
- Conducts inspections and monitoring to help evaluate ES&H performance, identify corrective actions, and confirm compliance with contract, regulatory, project, and Bechtel requirements.
- Develops safety and health communication through publications, flyers, posters, signs, banners, and other communication media.
- Analyzes data, tracks ES&H performance and trends, and prepares technical reports.
- Supports other ES&H team members and tasks associated with all three ES&H disciplines.
Requirements:
- A Master of Science degree (or equivalent) in occupational safety, health, or a science-related discipline from an accredited university or college with 4 or more years of relevant experience; or a Bachelor of Science degree (or equivalent) in one of the same disciplines with 6 or more years of relevant experience; or an Associates degree (or equivalent) in one of the same disciplines with 8 or more years of relevant experience; or 10 or more years of relevant safety or health experience.
- Valid drivers license.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Ability to research and comprehend organizational and regulatory requirements.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Computer skills for preparing presentations, data management, and report preparation.
- Analytical skills related to sampling, monitoring, and recordkeeping.
- Adaptable and able to work outdoors in a field environment under various weather conditions.
- Ability to support multiple work shifts, as needed, and a wide range of tasks.
- Demonstrated interest, training, and experience in applied sciences.
- Knowledge and experience with ISO 45001 Management System standards.
- Specialized technical skills and knowledge related to an applicable safety or health discipline.
- Broad technical knowledge, science skills, and technical writing abilities.
