Position OverviewWe are seeking a talented Engineering Project Lead to spearhead complex and innovative technical initiatives, serving as an effective liaison between engineering teams and management. This diverse technical role is pivotal in steering projects that encompass system-level engineering, component design, and advanced analytical processes. A strong emphasis is placed on delivering engineering solutions that align with customer requirements and surpass their expectations.
This prominent leadership role involves estimating, planning, and overseeing the technical execution of military and specialized commercial projects with budgets ranging from less than $2M to over $150M. Daily responsibilities include organizing, guiding, and motivating multidisciplinary project teams of 3-10+ engineers, along with making direct contributions to project tasks. Success in this position hinges on the ability to manage intricate technical challenges, inspire the engineering team to devise innovative solutions, and effectively document and communicate project status to stakeholders, including executive management.
Regular interactions with suppliers and customers are integral to this role. The individual will be accountable for the complete ownership of assigned projects and tasks, working independently and confidently within a matrix team structure. A deep understanding of DRS products, systems, and services is essential to coordinate and continuously assess the engineering work scope and its alignment with the overall project objectives.
Key Responsibilities- Plan and execute detailed technical work scopes to ensure high quality, timely delivery, and adherence to budget constraints.
- Contribute to project success through individual technical efforts as necessary.
- Decompose large or ambiguous issues into manageable plans and task lists.
- Develop comprehensive project plans and pre-contract proposal estimates based on:
- Thorough understanding of the overall project scope and critical details.
- Well-documented basis of estimates.
- Detailed design verification plans.
- Effective technical review processes.
- Quantifiable risk and opportunity management strategies.
- Clear tasking and advocacy for essential resources to execute engineering efforts.
- Lead and inspire technical teams in the design and development of innovative products and systems.
- Represent Leonardo DRS confidently in front of customers, including the U.S. Navy.
- Communicate technical and programmatic information clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Review, analyze, and report on project milestones, providing estimates for project/task completion.
- Manage the release of drawings, schematics, bills of materials, and software to support technical projects.
- Collaborate with various departments, DRS locations, and suppliers to address challenges and develop cost-effective, high-quality solutions.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering from an accredited institution with a minimum of 6 years of relevant experience.
- At least 3 years of proven experience in an engineering leadership capacity.
- Demonstrated success in managing the product development lifecycle from concept to deployment.
- Experience with system-level engineering principles and methodologies.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
Preferred Qualifications
- Strong sense of ownership and accountability for assigned projects.
- Experience executing projects for the U.S. military or international navies.
- Familiarity with industrial and military design standards.
- Experience in developing electric machines, motor/drive systems, or other power machinery.
- Knowledge of marine steam turbines, gas turbines, and/or diesel engines.
- Experience in designing and developing marine equipment.
- Familiarity with agile project management tools and/or Jira.
- Specific experience with large (1MW+) permanent magnet electric machines.
- Proven ability to lead the successful integration of multiple subsystems.
- Demonstrated focus on cost-effective design while meeting performance requirements.
- Proven track record of adaptability to meet project demands.
- Active security clearance is a plus.
