Key Responsibilities:

As an Engineering Technician I, you will train as a Chain Helper, Surveyor, or Rod Helper on a survey crew and learn routine drafting. Your duties will include holding the end of a surveying chain, plumb bob, or tape in measuring distances, using a range pole and prism to indicate a point, or placing the device as directed by the instrument operator. You will also use a level rod, and adjust and read the target in establishing or obtaining existing elevations. Additionally, you will set up and move survey instruments and related equipment, drive hubs and stakes to indicate point and grade, dig and search for survey monuments and benchmarks, clear and remove obstacles from survey line of sight, and clean and care for instruments and equipment. You may also use hand tools and may use a total station theodolite or level in training and under close supervision. Other responsibilities include setting cones to direct traffic, performing routine drafting work using computer-aided drafting software in training and under close supervision, drawing and tracing simple maps and diagrams, assisting in tracing other plans and diagrams and in preparing assessment rolls, making routine computations, maintaining location maps and water pump age records, and assisting in the installation and maintenance of traffic counters. You will also operate a plotter, copying machine, calculator, computer, and surveying and drafting equipment and software.

Requirements:

To be successful in this role, you will need a high school diploma or equivalent and knowledge of mathematics, including trigonometry, geometry, and basic algebra, and the ability to perform calculations. You will also need to be technologically skilled and computer savvy.
