Optometrist - Comprehensive Eye Care Specialist

Job Summary:
The Optometrist will assess patients with a wide array of visual issues, diagnose ocular diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, and provide treatment as permitted by licensure.
Referrals to other qualified Kaiser Permanente specialists will be made as necessary for additional evaluation and care.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct thorough examinations of patients experiencing various visual problems utilizing a comprehensive range of optometric tools and techniques.
- Diagnose ocular diseases, disorders, and deficiencies, prescribing appropriate treatments in accordance with Maryland state laws and regulations.
- Prescribe and fit contact lenses as needed.
- Assess visual requirements for patients with partial sight.
- Recommend low-vision aids such as telescopic and microscopic lenses, magnifiers, and other optical devices to assist low-vision patients.
- In accordance with state regulations or under physician standing orders, utilize diagnostic pharmaceutical agents to identify and diagnose ocular conditions.
- Employ examination techniques to identify ocular signs of systemic diseases and medication effects.
- Make referrals to other Kaiser Permanente providers as necessary for further evaluation and treatment.
- Participate in departmental and educational meetings, including peer review activities within the medical facility.
- Collaborate regularly with internal medicine, pediatrics, and ophthalmology regarding patient care matters.
- Assist in the development and implementation of eye care education programs for medical center staff and patient seminars.
- Under physician standing orders and in collaboration with an ophthalmologist, evaluate and manage anterior segment disorders.
This is a full-time float position requiring travel between locations, with a commitment of 50% travel and one Saturday per month.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience:
- Not applicable.
Education:
- Graduation from an accredited Optometry school.
- Enrollment in PECOS within 90 days of hire.
Licensure and Certification:
- Valid Optometrist License (Maryland, Virginia, or District of Columbia).
- Basic Life Support certification from the American Heart Association required at hire.
- National Provider Identifier required at hire.
Additional Requirements:
- Not applicable.
Preferred Qualifications:
- A minimum of two years of experience in an interdisciplinary healthcare setting is preferred, or successful completion of an accredited residency program.
- Completion of an accredited residency in Optometry is preferred.
Work Schedule:
- Full-time position, 40 hours per week.
- Day shift, Monday through Friday, with working hours from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM.
