The Opportunity

As a dedicated Commercial Insurance UW I, you will implement and manage commercial insurance underwriting processes and programs to ensure all underwriting processes are compliant, executed in a cost-efficient manner and effective in achieving desired. outcomes. Critically reviews and provides feedback on existing Commercial Insurance Underwriting policies and processes to achieve business deliverables.  Partners with internal stakeholders to maintain Commercial Insurance Underwriting policies and procedures while ensuring compliance with state regulations.

Coordinates single line of business/organizational area level projects.

We offer a flexible work environment that requires an individual to be in the office 4 days per week. This position must work a hybrid model at one of these regional office locations: San Antonio, TX, Phoenix, AZ, Colorado Springs, CO, Tampa, FL, or Chesapeake, VA, Plano, TX, and Charlotte, NC. Relocation assistance is not available for this position.

What you’ll do:

  • Applies knowledge of contract coverages, underwriting programs, market data, state-specific, and other regulatory information to make underwriting decisions related to commercial insurance operations and/or transactions.
  • Evaluates risk and make underwriting determination for commercial lines of business within established guidelines and limits of authority.
  • Creates, modifies, and delivers messages and/or communications to internal business partners on underwriting programs, philosophy, and individual file decisions.
  • Contributes to the development and implementation of business guidelines, controls, and strategies consistent with company policy and goals.
  • Effectively owns and manages multiple underwriting processes and leverage data to make data-driven recommendations with limited assistance.
  • Serves as a resource to team members on escalated issues of a moderately complex nature.
  • Responsible for projects, issues, or initiatives of moderate scope or medium and or high rated risks for underwriting processes and/or solutions.
  • Provides direction, advice and shares knowledge with other employees who execute on underwriting programs, guidelines, and processes.
  • Gathers and evaluates data to conduct root cause analysis and apply process-oriented approaches to identify and solve gaps within the process.
  • Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.

What you’ll have:

  • Bachelor’s degree: OR 4 years of related experience (in addition to the minimum years of experience required) may be substituted in lieu of degree.
  • 4 years of insurance underwriting experience, with at least 2 years of commercial insurance underwriting or as a producer or agent of commercial insurance products.
  • Experience executing underwriting processes to make decisions.
  • Experience applying policy forms, notices, & procedures.
  • Experience reviewing and analyzing data to draw conclusions and make decisions.
  • Proficient knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.

  • CPCU designation.
  • Experience with General Liability product.
  • Experience and knowledge of Inland Marine product.
  • Excess/Umbrella product knowledge.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Ability to execute in an entrepreneurial/start up environment.

US military experience through military service or a military spouse/domestic partner

What we offer:

Compensation: USAA has an effective process for assessing market data and establishing ranges to ensure we remain competitive. You are paid within the salary range based on your experience and market data of the position. The actual salary for this role may vary by location. The salary range for this position is: $67,220-$128,480.

Employees may be eligible for pay incentives based on overall corporate and individual performance and at the discretion of the USAA Board of Directors.
