ZSFG GI Division Chief

The University of California San Francisco (UCSF) Department of Medicine at the Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (ZSFG) seeks an outstanding leader for its Division of Gastroenterology. The Division comprises 11 physicians and 43 staff members who are mission- driven to provide high-quality, patient-centered care to patients within the San Francisco safety net. The members of the GI Division are also key contributors to educational and research efforts relevant to our patient population. The expectation is that the Division Chief will not only maintain the division's current forward momentum, but also pave the way for expansion in new directions.

The ZSFG GI Division functions as a combined GI and hepatology unit that performs ~1000 new consults and >5100 endoscopic procedures annually including EUS and biliary endoscopy. The physical plant is state-of-the-art, with 4 procedure rooms plus a dedicated room for advanced procedures. The division also staffs outpatient GI and liver clinics with a combined volume of >5600 patient visits annually. The division has a robust eReferral platform with three portals (GI, direct access endoscopy and hepatology) totaling >7500 virtual encounters per year.

Research within the division is diverse, spanning basic as well as clinical investigation in both luminal gastroenterology and hepatology. Extramural funding for research in the division totals $3M per year in annual direct costs. Examples include implementation science efforts to improve colorectal cancer screening; clinical and translational research programs in autoimmune liver diseases, alcoholic liver disease and cirrhosis; and clinical trials in metabolic liver disease, cirrhosis and colon cancer detection. Basic science efforts focus on cell biological studies of metabolic liver disease and animal models of hepatic fibrosis with a focus on antifibrotic therapies.

Education of medical students, residents and fellows represents an important mission of the Division. UCSF GI fellows consistently rate the ZSFG GI rotation as one of their best educational experiences. Several GI faculty are dedicated clinician educators with leadership positions in undergraduate and graduate medical education programs. Additional faculty hold leadership positions in health services/hospital administration.

About ZSFG: ZSFG and UCSF have been partners in public health since 1872, attracting physicians who are leaders in their fields and making ZSFG one of the nation's top academic medical centers, training tomorrow's providers and leaders and providing the best care that medical science has to offer. ZSFG is an essential part of the San Francisco Health Network, serving over 100,000 patients each year and providing 20 percent of the city's inpatient care. We serve the community with a full complement of inpatient, outpatient, emergency, diagnostic and psychiatric services for adults and children. ZSFG offers compassionate and culturally competent care to a diverse community of patients in more than 20 languages. ZSFG is owned and operated by the City and County of San Francisco, Department of Public Health and is part of a city-wide integrated health care system, providing primary, specialty and hospital care for vulnerable populations. ZSFG opened a new hospital in May 2016 and UCSF at ZSFG and a new research and academic building in 2023.

About the Department of Medicine: The Department of Medicine research programs at ZSFG receive over $140 million annually in funding. Research conducted at ZSFG has led to important breakthroughs in basic, clinical and systems research. The successful candidate will join the UCSF Department of Medicine (DOM) faculty and be included in the UCSF DOM compensation and benefits program.

We seek a Chief who has a demonstrated commitment to science, education and clinical practice, the ability to lead a diverse group and work with hospital partners using a collaborative approach, success in promoting or producing scholarship and funding, and the ability to mentor young academic clinicians. Successful candidates must demonstrate exceptional leadership, administrative and organizational skills and have national stature in academic Gastroenterology.
