Summary:

The Pharmacist in Charge (PIC) is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the Direct Relief Charitable Pharmacy program, including dispensing prescription medication according to licensed provider orders and California pharmacy law and best practices, scheduling staff, and counseling patients. The PIC should provide excellent customer service including engaging with patients/staff/associates and lead other staff to do the same. Other duties entail managing the pharmacy inventory including donated inventory which must be maintained according to manufacturer program guidelines. The PIC will be a resource expert for physicians and other licensed providers who are prescribing medications for their under and uninsured patients.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Oversee the procurement of donated and purchased medication, and other inventory according to Institutional Patient Assistant Program standards
  • Prepare medications and execute prescription orders for collection or shipping
  • Council patients on proper use of medications and advise patients about the possible side-effects of medication
  • Prepare monthly reports to determine patient adherence and follow-up with patients who may be out of compliance
  • Order pharmacy supplies and control the inventory daily
  • Verify prescription details with the healthcare providers who prescribed them, when necessary
  • Address patient's requests and complaints
  • Oversee all duties of Pharmacy Technicians and Staff Pharmacists, both employees and volunteers. Appoint and train new pharmacy employees and schedule shifts
  • Ensure pharmacy systems are in place to track patient eligibility so that prescriptions are dispensed to active patients
  • Implement and ensure a quality assurance program is in place for prescriptions filled
  • Maintain a safe and secure environment for prescription drugs within the pharmacy
  • Maintain pharmacy software system for dispensing and act as liaison to the vendor when there are technology concerns or problems
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • A Doctor of Pharmacy degree (Pharm.D.) accredited by the accreditation council for pharmacy education.
  • Current California pharmacist license
  • Demonstrable experience in a managerial capacity at a pharmacy
  • In-depth knowledge of the pharmacological uses and side effects of prescription drugs and controlled substances
  • Advanced knowledge of protocols regulating the safe storage of prescription drugs and controlled substances
  • Exceptional communication skills in advising patients, providers, and employees.
  • Ability to proactively follow up any irregularities with scripts processed at the pharmacy
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Must work independently but know when consultation with supervisor or other team members is necessary
  • Ability to complete monthly administrative tasks timely
  • Ability to perform duties accurately and efficiently
  • Adhere to all rules and regulations of the California Board of Pharmacy
  • Must be committed to working with underserved patients
