About The Position
AWSOM is seeking applicants for full-time, non-tenure foundational sciences educators in the discipline of microbiology/immunology. These individuals will work as part of an interdisciplinary team to ensure students receive broad-based training experience. Foundational sciences are interwoven throughout all four years of the curriculum. The ideal candidate will have a history of teaching excellence in medical education and work well with colleagues across the respective and relevant phases. This position will collaborate with other clinical and basic science faculty for the development of clinical cases to emphasize basic science foundational concepts and will participate in the development and review of formative and summative assessment items. The ideal candidate should have experience in multiple disciplines with clinical relevance including:
- Microbiology
- Immunology
The position is open at the Assistant Professor, Associate Professor, or Professor levels, and assigned rank will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Key Responsibilities
Develop Curriculum. Oversee the development and integration of all content tied to Microbiology/ Immunology, including the development of clinically relevant narratives and various assessment tools including, but not limited to, NBME-style multiple-choice questions and assessment of student performance in active learning sessions.
Teach/Instruct/Facilitate. Actively engage in student instruction, developing and delivering content using active learning methodologies. Collaborate with faculty colleagues to create, deliver, and pre-record flipped classroom content. Facilitate small and large group active learning; serve as facilitator for small group discussion such as in case-based learning, and other small group sessions.
Assessments/Evaluations. Create learning objectives related to respective foundational sciences and map them to the curriculum. Use appropriate metrics and assessment methods to ensure that students meet those objectives. Work collaboratively with faculty and staff for continuous quality improvement of courses, sessions, activities, and assessments.
Serve. Participate actively in leadership and group membership within the medical school (e.g., Curriculum Committee, Admissions Committee, etc.).
Grow Professionally. Participate in professional development programs to enhance teaching, educational and other skills needed to execute their responsibilities.
Other. Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Doctoral degree (MD, DO, PhD, MD/PhD, or equivalent) with specific training/experience in microbiology/Immunology or a closely related field.
Minimum Work Experiences
- Experience delivering microbiology/immunology content in higher education
- Evidence of teaching excellence in higher education
- Experience in curricular development, review, or implementation in higher education
- Participation in inter-disciplinary team endeavors
- Greater than two (2) years of experience in an accredited undergraduate medical education or post graduate level education programs with concentration in microbiology/immunology or closely related field
- Demonstrated experience and expertise in medical education, including curriculum development, formulating and editing assessment tools, and delivery in the field of microbiology/immunology
- Experience designing, delivering, and evaluating an integrated foundational science course
- Comfort with an array of educational technologies and active learning methodologies
- Understanding of different assessment methods
- Experience with different adult learning methods (e.g. CBL, PBL, TBL, small-groups, simulation, etc.)
- Exemplary written, verbal, and other communication skills
- Adaptability: Flexible to the needs of the position and the school
- Collaborative Skills: Build and maintain relationships internal and external to the organization
- Highly self-directed, reliable and accountable
- Strong commitment to self-care
- Committed to Diversity and Inclusion: Ability to work effectively with a wide variety of stakeholders (e.g., co-workers, students, community members)
- Ability to effectively mentor a diversity of individuals
