JOB SUMMARY:

The Director promotes and coordinates service and mission and Christian formation opportunities for the university community and helps to shape the Sunday liturgical experience and serves with other members of the Campus Ministry team in promoting faith formation and spiritual development, holistic education, and the Catholic and Vincentian identity and mission of the University. Under general supervision, the Director of Campus Ministry is primarily responsible for developing the liturgical, pastoral, spiritual, and faith community life on campus, in keeping with the mission of the university and the Catholic Church in higher education and oversees the maintenance and use of the Alumni Chapel.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES FOR DIRECTOR OF CAMPUS MINISTRY:

  • Oversee comprehensive campus ministry program in the areas of faith formation, liturgy, sacramental preparation, service, social justice, retreat ministry, leadership formation, and pastoral outreach, implement the covenant community model for the student portion of the university population.
  • Facilitate the campus ministry team in the formation of departmental goals and objectives and organize resources to realize the same.
  • Evaluate the quality of programs and services.
  • Supervise and annually evaluate campus ministry staff who report to this position.
  • Supervise work study students assigned to campus ministry
  • Maintain a full-time, on-campus presence as one considered Essential Personnel, and be prepared to address those functions remotely (from off-campus) as needed when operations are restricted, or the campus is closed.
  • Apportion responsibilities for the implementation of programming with other campus ministers based on population needs and minster's skills in, but not limited to, the following areas:
    • Initiate and oversee the providing of information and/or programming to the campus community on spirituality, relevant Church teachings, and contemporary issues.
    • Maintain Campus Ministry presence on social media platforms.
    • Develop and implement all policies governing campus ministry decisions consistent with University and Diocesan policy regarding the use of Alumni Chapel and the Catholic sacraments.
    • Counsel or refer students for human and spiritual growth.
    • Develop and oversee a campus religious vocation plan.
    • Facilitate worship opportunities for Catholic students and students from other faith traditions.
    • Develop, coordinate, and market weekly programming, appropriate to both Catholic and non-Catholic populations, for example, Bible study, evening programs, the Order of Christian Initiation of Adults, and adult catechesis.
    • Provide necessary pastoral care in critical life situations of members of the university community.
    • Direct university-wide prayer and liturgy events.
    • Coordinate the participation of volunteers at the campus liturgies, namely, musicians, lectors, and greeters.
    • Recruit, train, form, and evaluate student liturgical ministers at Sunday liturgy and arrange for monthly socials.
    • Be present at liturgical and university events.
    • Coordinate on campus semester mini-retreats of half day - once each semester.
    • Work in concert with the Vicar of Campus Ministry for the Diocese of Buffalo.
    • Maintain active membership in the national and diocesan campus ministry associations.
  • Administer sector budgets in collaboration with the Vice President.
  • Works with the Vice President in preparing materials for the Mission Committee of the Board of Trustees.
  • Works with the University Chaplain on liturgical and sacramental responsibilities.
  • Serve on the University Mission Committee.
  • Convene regular staff meetings.
  • Review and apply policies and procedures outlined in the University Affirmative Action Plan.
  • Collaborate with current university-wide initiatives in Inclusive Excellence, sustainability, and poverty elimination.
  • Maintain confidentiality of information (including but not limited to: proprietary information, student and employee personal information, vendor information, pricing and cost information, etc.), both during and after their employment with the University. Any question regarding the confidentiality of material should be referred to the supervisor. Any violation shall subject the employee to disciplinary action, up to and including termination of employment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

70% of Time

The Director of University Mission and Ministry oversees and directs the services, programs and employees of the department, and ministers directly to students, staff, faculty, and alumni by developing the liturgical, pastoral, spiritual, and faith community life on campus.

20% of Time Administration

Administrative and financial oversight, strategic planning and evaluation 10% of Time

Attending events and networking with other offices and campus collaborators.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to work evenings, weekends, and holidays when necessary and be flexible with schedule. Sundays are key days.
  • Ability to articulate knowledge of one's faith and to share this knowledge and faith through one's own unique gifts and talents.
  • Proficiency to handle various office machines including but not limited to: computer keyboard, computer software applications, calculator, copy machine, and fax.
  • Ability to receive telephone calls, respond to inquiries, and communicate with others by telephone
  • Must be a Roman Catholic in good standing, understanding and support the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church, including moral and pastoral teachings.
  • Must be approachable, energetic, and possess sound management and planning skills.
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, written, and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to facilitate dialogue with all faiths on the campus.
  • Ability to promote a safe and inclusive environment for varied campus constituencies.
  • Ability to dialogue with others about spiritual concerns and to encourage the spiritual development of others.
  • Ability to drive a personal or university vehicle for the purpose of university business periodically.
ERGONOMIC REQUIREMENTS:

The functions of the position usually performed sitting, but may require some amount of time standing, stooping, kneeling, bending, crouching, lifting, walking, carrying and other movements may be required. Tasks involving working on a computer keyboard and calculator, involve the extensive wrist and hand movement. All individuals are required to be able to perform these movements without significant risk of injury to themselves or others.

QUALIFICATION STANDARDS:
  • A Master's degree in Theology, Pastoral Ministry, Counseling, or related field is required.
  • A minimum of three to five years' experience in Campus Ministry or related work with young adults is required.
  • Valid driver's license required. A license must meet insurance company rules and regulations for driving underwriting criteria.
