As a member of the health-care provider team, he/she works directly with the patient and physician, performing a variety of specialized tasks involved in the performance of CT scans and Diagnostic X-ray,. The Technologist will also be responsible for any preparations or consents needed for Ultrasound or MRI patients. The Technologist must know the principles of x-ray and radiation safety, the operation of many types of equipment, the technique of obtaining specific radiographic exposures, image and film processing, and the professional handling and care of patients. The Technologist performs these procedures at a technical level not requiring constant supervision. They use independent judgment and initiative in appropriately applying the prescribed ionization radiation for Radiologic diagnosis.
General Information:
Listed below is an outline of the major duties and responsibilities that you will be required to perform. As the Technologist you are delegated the authority, responsibility and accountability to carry out your assigned duties.
Even though your job description is broad, every effort has been made to make this outline as complete as possible. However, we must emphasize that you may be required to perform other related duties and activities.
Significant Duties:
Ensures that practice is confined to the Scope of Practice as defined by ARRT.
Prepares the room properly for the patient.
Briefs the patient on the nature of the procedure and explains what they will be doing and what they will be asking the patient to do.
Positions patients for all exams using immobilization and protective equipment as deemed necessary by ARRT.
Observe patient’s during the examination.
Selects and operates the equipment according to the examination protocols and the characteristics of the equipment.
Provides radiation protection in accordance with ALARA.
Starting IV’s and injecting contrast.
Ensures that all exams requiring consent forms are completed prior to the examination.
Ensures that the proper patient’s name and other required information is on the data page.
Evaluate examinations for technical quality, marker placement, and correct hanging protocol before sending to ACS; repeating if necessary.
Transmit to PACS/tempPACS/vRad.
Transports patients to and from the department via wheelchair or stretcher.
Assists other technologists/staff with patient lifting and transport.
Ensures that all established protocols are followed.
Schedule patients for procedures in Cerner; ensuring that Medical Necessity is attained.
Registering/Ordering patients in Cerner and Meditech, ensuring to give the radiologist as much history as possible.
Prior to day of exam, ensure order is available and call patient to confirm appointment.
Assures Radiology reports are faxed/filed in a timely manner.
Reviews report for any critical findings, alerting nursing staff/resident/physician if needed.
Maintaining an orderly and clean work area.
Conducting the required inventory check of the examination rooms and stocking rooms when needed. When getting supplies from Materials management, ensure Requisition is completed promptly.
Alerts Director of depleting stock.
QA testing of CT Scanner, Crash Cart.
Completing of correct exams in Cerner Millennium and notifying management when changes need to be made.
Dispense oral contrast to patients for CT scans.
Load and operate power injections for contrast media administration.
Provide orientation and training to new technologists.
Assist with the education /training of new physicians (interns, residents, attending, ER).
Provide care for the psychological and physical needs of patients for all examinations.
Act in a team leader capacity on a routine basis.
Insures that all infection control precautions are adhered to.
Makes sure that all equipment is clean and in good working condition.
Maintains patient confidentiality.
Demonstrates a positive attitude.
Ensures technologist is available to patients/clinic/nursing when needed throughout all shifts. Including but not limited to returning patient/nursing/physician phone calls if a voice mail is received.
Dresses and conducts themselves in a professional and courteous manner at all times.
Keeps absenteeism and tardiness at a minimum and is available for extra time and duties when needed.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work therein.
Performs additional duties as requested by the Supervisor.
Performs all procedures and conducts oneself in accordance with the NCMC Polices and Procedures Manual.
Compliant with all regulations as listed in the NCMC Employee Handbook.
