Scope of Position:

The Controller manages the day-to-day accounting and financial reporting functions of the museum and will partner with the Chief Financial Officer in managing the financial operations of the Museum. The position assesses operations; reviews internal controls and practices; and recommends improvements for accuracy, efficiency, effectiveness and responsiveness. The Controller will supervise a staff of up to five members. The position must be able to plan, organize departmental workloads, and work effectively with other staff members at all organizational levels, including Trustees, and business partners.

Essential Functions:
  • Assists in the preparation of monthly financial statements, Board of Trustees financial packages, and annual budget.
  • Implements and maintains financial statements in accordance with current generally accepted accounting principles as applicable to nonprofit organizations.
  • Works with the CFO to manage the organization's financial performance against budget and communicates significant variances and other issues to the management team and Board.
  • Coordinates annual external audits for the Museum and its benefit plans.
  • Compiles information for and coordinates preparation of annual Form 990 and Forms 5500 tax information filings as well as Form 1120 for unrelated business income.
  • Coordinates month-end and year-end closing process
  • Review all applicable tax returns, payroll reports, and endowment funds for compliance with regulatory requirements and grant agreements.
  • Prepares cash flow reports and assists with cash management.
  • Researches and evaluates potential tax issues, i.e. sales tax.
  • Handles various special projects such as implementation of new systems, financial forecasting, and ad hoc analysis or data requests.
  • Provides management and supervision of the accounting staff.
  • Attends applicable meetings with the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Assists in the preparation of Board committee materials.
  • Oversees fixed asset tracking and accounting.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Requirements

Education, Experience, and Certifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance; Masters degree preferred.
  • Active CPA certification is required.
  • Public accounting experience is required.
  • 5-10 years of progressively responsible experience in non-profit organizations is required.
  • Experience with accounting, budgeting, and accounts payable systems is required. Knowledge of Blackbaud applications (Financial Edge/Raisers Edge) is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Advanced software knowledge including, but not limited to: Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other Microsoft Office products
  • Experience in financial statement preparations, investment fund accounting, endowment tracking, fixed asset accounting, accounts payable/receivable, and tax return preparation/review
  • Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously
  • Exceptional communication skills, able to work with groups to meet organizational goals
  • Ability to work in a collegial manner with a diverse workforce; experience managing a team with demonstrated success
  • Demonstrated experience with results-oriented goals
