The HSE Manager provides leadership on matters pertaining to safety and environmental issues in the Cleveland site. Responsible for the development, planning and administering of an effective HSE program and for reporting on matters concerning accidents involving property damage, serious injuries and the findings pertaining to equipment accidents, incidents and near misses. Thorough knowledge of fundamentals of safety education, industrial hygiene, accident prevention and safety psychology.

Dimensions of Position:

  • Plant HSE – Vesuvius Standards, OSHA, and Environmental compliance
  • Waste Water Treatment


Key Result Areas:
  • Develop/maintain all required written safety plans in accordance with regulatory requirements, e.g., HazCom, BBP, Hearing Conservation, LO/TO, PPE Assessments, Confined Space, and Fall protection
  • Ensure all required plant safety inspections are performed and documented, e.g., fire extinguishers, emergency response equipment, eye wash stations, emergency lights, ladders, cranes, housekeeping, and that corrective actions are completed for identified deficiencies
  • Assist in the performance of accident and near-miss investigations and ensures root causes are identified and corrective actions implemented.
  • Maintains close working relationships with department managers/supervisors to assure proper support of the safety program at each location.
  • Ensures the MSDS database is current for all materials
  • Chair the plant safety committee
  • Ensure JSA's/risk/hazard analyses are performed and are current. May perform analyses.
  • Compile required safety performance metric data for the country specific injury/illness log and for reporting to government agencies and to Vesuvius databases.
  • Prepare and submit all required environmental permit applications/renewals and routine agency reports, e.g., air emissions, water and wastewater, hazardous/toxic waste, spills and releases, hazardous material/substance inventories
  • Manage all plant waste disposal activity to ensure compliance with applicable regulations
  • Develop/maintain plant emergency response plans and ensures drills are performed to document plan effectiveness.
  • Review plant environmental permits and ensure terms and conditions are understood and complied with, ensures required documentation is maintained and required regulatory reports are submitted to the respective agency, e.g., air discharge permits, storm water discharge permits, local wastewater permits
  • Evaluate proposed projects and proposed new chemicals and ensures plans are in-place and implemented to address HSE compliance issues
  • Develops and implements plant programs, policies, and procedures to conform with Vesuvius standards
  • Investigate environmental incidents to determine root causes and prepares and implements corrective action plans. Ensure incident records are maintained for the site
  • Coordinate and assist with corporate initiatives, participating on teams in order to drive best practices across Vesuvius.
Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health or related field with a proven track record of successfully managing a strong and robust safety, health and environmental program.
  • 5+ years demonstrated hands-on experience in a HSE Management role within a manufacturing environment.
  • Professional certifications related to the Safety, Health and Environment field
  • ISO9001, OHSA, RCMS, HAZCOM, First Aid, CPR, RCRA Hazardous Waste Management professional certifications/trainings
  • Experience in any combination in the following areas: Environmental Compliance. In-depth knowledge of industrial safety programs, occupational safety and health administration requirements and Code of Federal Regulations. In-depth knowledge of environmental regulations.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with knowledge of MS Office
  • Ability to multitask, manage time effectively, prioritize work, and operate with a sense of urgency.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws/codes pertaining to workplace safety
  • Background in incident investigations, such as 5-Why, What-If Analysis, 6-sigma, etc.
  • Experience working with Safety Programs such as Lockout-Tagout, Industrial Vehicles, Hoisting Equipment, Electrical Safety, Fall Protection, Confined Space, Ergonomics, and Industrial Hygiene Programs.
