The West York Area School District will have an opening for a School Nurse with an estimated start date of January 13, 2025. This person will manage the caseload at both our Middle School and Wallace Elementary Buildings.

Qualifications:
  • Proper PDE School Nurse Certification
  • Registered Nurse License
Duties and Responsibilities, (including but not limited to the following):

Provide Direct Care:
  • Administer first aid and emergency care to students and staff as needed.
  • Manage and treat minor injuries, illnesses, and other health conditions in accordance with state laws and school policies.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by physicians.
Health Assessments:
  • Conduct screenings for vision, hearing, scoliosis, growth, and other health-related assessments as required by the Pennsylvania Department of Health regulations.
  • Monitor students' chronic health conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, and allergies, ensuring individualized care plans are followed.
Health Records Management:
  • Maintain accurate and confidential health records for all students, including immunizations, physical exams, and emergency contact information.
  • Document nursing interventions, medical treatments, and health screenings in compliance with state and federal laws, including HIPAA and FERPA regulations.
Promote Health and Wellness:
  • Develop and implement health education programs for students, parents, and staff on topics such as nutrition, hygiene, and disease prevention.
  • Participate in school wellness initiatives and contribute to policies that promote a healthy school environment.
Collaborate with School Staff:
  • Work closely with teachers, counselors, and administrators to identify students with special health needs and implement appropriate health plans.
  • Serve as a liaison between the school, families, and healthcare providers to ensure continuity of care.
Communicable Disease Control:
  • Monitor and manage outbreaks of communicable diseases, following state health department protocols and notifying appropriate authorities as necessary.
  • Educate the school community on infection prevention and assist in implementing health measures during disease outbreaks.
Health Emergency Preparedness:
  • Participate in the development and implementation of school health emergency plans, including responding to incidents like asthma, seizures, and anaphylaxis.
  • Train staff on emergency protocols, including the use of AEDs and EpiPens.
Compliance with State Regulations:
  • Ensure compliance with all Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and the Department of Health (DOH) requirements regarding student health services
  • Stay current on state and federal regulations, including updates on immunization requirements, communicable diseases, and health-related laws.
Support Students with Special Needs:
  • Develop and oversee individualized healthcare plans (IHPs) and 504 plans for students with chronic health conditions or disabilities.
  • Ensure appropriate accommodations are in place for students with medical needs, including administration of medications and treatments during the school day.
Crisis Intervention:
  • Provide emotional support and crisis intervention for students facing trauma, mental health issues, or personal emergencies.
  • Collaborate with mental health professionals, school counselors, and social workers to support student well-being.
Other Duties:
  • Perform any duties and responsibilities that are within the scope of employment, as assigned by the Principal, Pupil Services Director, or designee.

  • Utilize databases, Microsoft Office products, and other district software and technology proficiently, as designated by the supervisor.
  • Must be able to work independently or in a team (as circumstances warrant), and able to work with frequent interruptions.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with students, personnel at all levels, and members of the public.
  • Follow written and verbal directions, provide direction, and motivate peers.
  • Must be able to read/write/correspond clearly, concisely, and effectively at a post-secondary level; interpret and follow district policies, regulations, and work rules; and exercise good judgment.
  • Must appropriately handle confidential information.
