Radiation Safety Technician

We are seeking a Radiation Safety Technician who will assist the Radiation Safety Officer in the continued development and implementation of radiological safety programs to facilitate the safe and efficacious use of radiation sources in research, medical diagnosis therapy, and education. Primary emphasis will be on preventing or minimizing radiation exposure of employees, students, visitors, patients, and the environment to radiation sources. Specific Duties & Responsibilities Perform radiation protection surveys in research laboratories and clinic areas that use radioactive material. Assure that radiation safety requirements and physical containment comply with State and Federal regulations and University and Hospital policies related to the safe use of radioactive materials. Monitor inpatients who have received therapeutic administrations of radioactive material and prepare nursing dosimeters, determine visitor restrictions, prepare contamination control in patient rooms, measure exposure rates, survey items for contamination, and collect radioactive waste. Perform close-out surveys of labs no longer using radioactive material. Survey equipment being repaired, transported, or disposed of for contamination. Prepare and package shipments of radioactive material following DOT regulations. Maintain air sampling equipment, collect samples, and prepare data for evaluation. Assist in record keeping for personnel monitoring and bioassay program. Perform bioassay measurements for staff members. Maintain records of laboratory areas where radioactive materials are used, what material is ordered, how much is used, and disposal of radioactive material. Provide coverage to the University for emergencies involving radioactive material. Investigate radiation accidents and radioactive contamination and provide technical assistance for contamination incidents. Perform leak tests of sealed sources. Assist with delivery, pickup, scanning, and shipment of radiation badges. Assist with the radioactive waste disposal program and maintain records. Instruct University faculty, staff, and students in radiation safety. Respond to spills or accidents involving radioactive material in the lab or clinic. Assist with response to Code Yellow Radiation emergency. Minimum Qualifications Associate Degree, preferably in Physics or Biology, or high school diploma with two (2) to four (4) years of related work experience in a radiation safety program for a ‘broad scope” radioactive materials license for a medical institution. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of the theory, principles, and practices in the field of radiation safety/health physics. The individual must be highly motivated, a self-starter, an effective communicator with excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills, must be able to work under stress, and be willing to learn and apply knowledge.
