JOB SUMMARY

The Principal Engineer is a management level position in the Engineering Department and is responsible for directing and supervising the review of land development and various public works projects for the Department. The Principal Engineer is responsible for the management, development, and professional growth of the Department teams and individual staff. Duties will include managing and administering various Department activities, programs, and projects.

A Principal Engineer provides expertise in the areas of planning, coordination, and supervision of the design, program and project management, and land development review of Public Works' projects which will require the following skills:
  • Successful track record with local agencies, clients' relations, project management, and business development.
  • Lead selected projects within technical areas of expertise and broad experience in working with local public works agencies.
  • Ability to work effectively with others to manage and deliver projects.
  • Mentor staff and track staff professional development.
  • Active in public works organizations or other industry groups.
We only consider candidates living locally or within the State of CA. We do not pay any relocation expenses.

This position is available as full-time or as-needed.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Supervise and participate in the design and review of plans and specifications of land development and public works projects.
  • Direct the engineering staff to perform complex engineering work for Public Works' projects and programs, ensuring technical competence and compliance with current codes.
  • Manage the review and approve site improvement plans for conformance with local codes and regulations and design principles.
  • Design and review of street/storm drain/sewer, site improvement, grading plans.
  • Review of WQMP for Water Regional Board Districts in California.
  • Design preparation and review of hydrology/hydraulic reports and calculations.
  • Plans, organizes, and directs the administration and management of plan check contracts.
  • Review, evaluates and makes recommendations for and/or approves contracts, contract modifications, specifications, related documents, and the settlement of claims.
  • Oversee Department projects' delivery and budget management.
  • Work closely with clients and the group leads to ensure compliance with the agencies adopted policies.
  • Perform other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • 20+ years of progressive engineering experience.
  • 10 years of land development and public improvement design and plan review experience.
  • 5+ years of supervisory experience.
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering from an accredited college or university.
  • Current PE California License is required. Specialty certifications are highly desired.
  • Proven success managing projects with strong client relations.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of electronic databases such as BlueBeam and Microsoft Teams
  • Experience with making presentations and leading team meetings.
  • Strong interpersonal and team building skills.

  • Driving occasionally to job sites.
  • Sitting/standing for extended periods of time.
  • Working with detailed, finely printed documents.
  • Capacity to work in a fast-paced environment when dealing with deadlines and multiple projects.

The compensation for this position is $140,000 to $190,000 annually.

Exact compensation may vary based on skills, experience, and location.
