Job Description

TOUR: Rotating

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Under direct supervision of an ophthalmologist, assists in the diagnostic evaluation, management, treatment, education and care of patients. Performs a variety of ophthalmic diagnostic testing, measurement, screening and imaging procedures, related supportive services, ensuring patient safety, optimal utilization of resources, service delivery and compliance with NYC Health + Hospitals, setting to improve outcomes and patient experience.

SUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Initial intake to obtain medical, ocular and family history information, including chief complaint(s), past and present illness(es) or health problems, allergies and sensitivities, and medications,
2. Reviews patients' histories and accurately documents information in the electronic medical record, following established guidelines for documentation and reporting.
3. Performs preliminary screening examinations and diagnostic testing, such as spectacle measuring, visual acuity testing with and without pinhole, intraocular pressure testing with iCARE, color vision testing, Humphrey visual field testing and ophthalmic imaging such as optical coherence tomography, B-scan ultrasound, slit lamp photos, fundus photos, and using appropriate ophthalmic devices and methodologies, as directed.
4. Educates patients on proper preparation for eye-related testing and procedures, and proper eye care.
5. Prepares and maintains examination rooms; prepares patients for examination by obtaining vital signs, assists providers during examinations, as directed; and maintains office antisepsis.
6. Safely operates, calibrates, and inspects all job-related equipment; maintains cleanliness and order of equipment and supplies; assists with monitoring and inventory of equipment, and supplies; reports defective or damaged materials, equipment, and/or supplies to administrator.
7. Administers mydriatic, screening cycloplegic and anesthetic eye drops under the supervision of a licensed physician/optometrist in accordance with the standards and requirements of the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions.
8. Performs assigned screening examinations and diagnostic testing, photography such as A-scans, automated keratometry, corneal topography, advance ocular motility testing, pupillary assessment and lensometry, intraocular pressure, optical coherence tomography (OCT) tests, refractometry, retinoscopy, slit lamp examination and other clinical testing and ophthalmic imaging using appropriate ophthalmic devices, as directed.
9. Assists physicians with intracoular injections, surgical site identification, laser and other surgical procedures; orders lenses for surgical procedures; provides scrub assistance and performs eye irrigations and cleansing, as directed; applies aseptic technique and follows universal precautions and infection control procedures.
10. Accurately documents and reconciles drug logs to ensure proper inventory control and secures all medications.
11. Assists in the training and orientation of new employees, as required.
12. Effectively communicates with patients, families, and the clinical team; effectively communicates with patients about procedures to be performed to offer reassurance; clearly communicates, orally and in writing, patient care activities and patient condition to appropriate parties.
13. Coordinates efforts of various clinic and health care setting departments in scheduling and re-booking appointments through EPIC systems, including patient referrals via work queues.
14. Maintains daily contact with nursing and other professional personnel within department to ensure an accurate and updated Daily Appointment Report (DAR/EPIC) and supplies.
16. Help prepare procedure consent and time-out forms as well as post-procedure instructions for physician prior to procedures in clinic
17. Participates in patient visit redesign and patient centered scheduling initiatives. Updates patient demographics in (EPIC) electronic medical record and conducts patient reminder phone calls as needed.
18. Assist patients to schedule/rescheduling and cancel appointments in EPIC.
21. Read and respond to departmental emails and In-basket messages in EPIC.

24. Support coordination of patient care using EPIC with documentation and conducting reminder call and missed appointments.

15. Assists physicians and Nurses as directed; performs other related work, as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

For Assignment to Level II:
1. High School diploma or its educational equivalent; and
2. Two (2) years of relevant clinical ophthalmology experience performing tasks, as described in Levels, I and II
above; or
3. Holds a valid Certification as an Ophthalmic Technician (COT) issued by the IJCAHPO.
