JOB DESCRIPTION

Under administrative and direct supervision of the Regional Director of Speech Pathology service. Performs and interprets motor speech, language, cognitive, and voice diagnostic testing primarily to pediatric outpatients in accordance with established protocols and evidenced based practice. Counsels families/caregivers and patients as to test results. Interacts with referring physicians and prepares diagnostic reports. Provides motor speech, language, cognitive and voice therapies to relevant patients. Completes all appropriate medical documentation in a timely fashion. Participates in training or in-service education programs. Manages outpatient systems to provide efficient access to care.

RESPONSIBILITIES

1. Performs diagnostic speech, language and voice evaluations in order to diagnose impairments such as language disorders and delay, motor/speech impairments, voice disorders, and stuttering in pediatric patients.

2 . Prepares written evaluations including individualized treatment plans to address identified communication needs. Completes medical documentation in the EMR. Provides patient and family counseling on results; advises physicians and clinical staff of results; discusses speech and language therapies. Contacts external agencies regarding test results/case management.

3. Prepares written treatment progress notes, discharge summaries and other medical documentation at appropriate intervals. Provides patient/family counseling; advises physicians and clinical staff of progress; maintains contacts with external agencies.

4. Participates in medical and professional conferences to discuss test results, case analysis and follow-up to treatments. Participates in institutional or external in-service programs for purposes of continuing clinical education. Provides teaching or training, as required, of clinicians, medical residents, students and externs. Participates in quality assurance programs for service.

5. Performs other duties pursuant to clinical responsibility, such as arranging follow-up for patients. Performs related duties as required professionally, or required by Regional Director of Speech Pathology, physicians, Director of ENT Service.

QUALIFICATIONS

1. Job requires completion of NYS-approved program for training of speech language pathologists to acquire knowledge of assessment and treatment of communication disorders involving language, fluency, voice and articulation; strong knowledge of developmental milestones and typical communication patterns in children; use of equipment; and counseling, ordinarily acquired via Master’s Degree. Completion of CFY and at least four years of experience with this population/setting are required.

2. New York State licensure as a Speech Language Pathologist is mandatory.

3. Very high level of analytical ability required to effectively and expeditiously diagnose and treat communication disorders including cognitive communicative, voice, language for culturally diverse patient populations. Effective time management for punctual documentation is also required.

4. Interacts with various internal hospital medical, administrative and professional staff in the course of routine clinical duties. High degree of responsibility required for daily contacts with patients and their families. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team-oriented environment.

5. Some manual dexterity required for manipulation of testing or treatment materials and equipment.

  1. Spanish, Bengali, Mandarin or Cantonese speaking skills are a plus.

  2. Demonstrated commitment to ongoing professional development.
