Description

Skyland Trail, a nonprofit mental health residential treatment program for adults and adolescents in Atlanta, is seeking a Director of Nursing.

Overview:

The Director of Nursing (DON) oversees all of the nursing operations at Skyland Trail to ensure that patients receive the safest, highest quality medication management and integrated nursing care and that Skyland Trail is a destination nursing program for professionals. The DON will evaluate and direct individual nursing activities of all nurses, establish goals for the nursing department, and enforce compliant healthcare policies and procedures.

Responsibilities:
  • Manage and lead all nursing personnel operations.
  • Directly supervise the lead nurses at each of the residential campuses.
  • Develop short- and long-term goals for the entire nursing department, using quality metrics to assess progress and guide continuous improvement efforts.
  • Establish new policies and update existing ones to improve the standard of patient care.
  • Serve as the Organizations Infection Control Officer, developing policies and procedures to prevent, mitigate, and learn from community infections.
  • Maintain nursing budgets and record all expenses using prudent financial judgment.
  • Respond to all nursing-related issues or complaints in a timely manner.
  • Coordinate nursing functions with the physician services, admissions team, and all other departments to ensure excellent patient care, good customer service, and Organizational efficiency.
  • Hire and train new nursing staff members.
  • Evaluate staff performances, remediating lower-performers and establishing ongoing educational opportunities to maintain evidence-based nursing care and professional growth opportunities for higher-performers.
  • Develop clinical group curricula for nurses to lead at all residential campuses.
  • Participate in monthly Quality Improvement Committee meetings to focus on prevention of medication errors, infection control, care safety initiatives as a clinical team leader.
  • Attend and contribute to weekly clinical group supervision led by Chief Medical Officer (CMO).
  • Attend and participate in weekly Senior Clinical Leadership staff meetings chaired by CMO.
  • Collect data and author annual Infection Control Report for accrediting bodies.
  • Prepare medication storage areas, MARs, controlled substance counts, etc. for audits from State and national accrediting bodies
  • Train staff nurses how to appropriately triage patients clinical concerns and symptoms, using outstanding clinical judgment to secure appropriate resolution, including consulting with physicians, residential counselors, or obtaining external assessment or treatment when necessary.
  • Ensure that the residential facilities maintain compliance with all DHR, ORS, and Joint Commission standards for medical services.
  • Establish and utilize procedures such as shift notes, hand-off communications, on-call system to communicate pertinent patient information to the interdisciplinary team.
  • Support cultivation of a safe and healthy therapeutic environment at all of the residential facilities.
  • Prepare residential and transitional housing nurses to assist, teach, and model necessary and appropriate daily living skills to patients, including proper use of medication boxes and procurement of preventive medical care.
  • Desire to teach nursing students and to share educational efforts with related schools of nursing.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in nursing from an accredited school of nursing
  • Minimum of two years' experience in a similar nursing role
  • Certified CPR and nursing qualifications
  • Understanding of basic budgeting and financial reporting
  • In-depth knowledge of best practices in nursing care as well as specifics of nursing functions within a residential psychiatric facility
  • Desire to stay current in knowledge of nursing practices and standards
  • Working knowledge of State and National accrediting body standards and nursing expectations
  • Ability to incorporate data and continuous quality improvement information into policy and practice revisions
  • Excellent ability to lead and develop personnel
  • Outstanding team orientation with a desire to be helpful partners for all other services
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • Good management skills to elevate lead nurses to their highest potentials
About Skyland Trail:

Skyland Trail provides mental health residential and day treatment programs for teens and adults struggling with mental illnesses like depression, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders, and schizophrenia. Though struggling with their mental illness, Skyland Trail patients have entered treatment voluntarily, and clients and their families are engaged in their treatment program. Skyland Trail campuses include gardens, private patient rooms, and common rooms that provide a therapeutic, healing environment for our clients and families.
