POSITION: Respiratory Therapist - Per Diem

SUMMARY: This position requires the Respiratory Therapist to be responsible for the administration of therapeutic gases, aerosols and nebulized medications and other therapeutic modalities as ordered by the physician. The Respiratory Therapist provides respiratory care consults and assessments when requested by the physician and makes daily rounds on all patients on the respiratory care service, reviews charts and does patient teaching as needed. The Respiratory Therapist draws arterial blood gases, responds to all cardiopulmonary emergencies and establishes a patent airway, by endotracheal intubation if needed and initiates mechanical ventilation and monitors same according to department policy. The Respiratory Therapist attends in-service education to keep current on the state of the art in respiratory care.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Makes daily rounds on all patients and reviews orders for therapy.
  • Documents the results of therapy and patient response to treatment (pulse, breath sounds, sputum production, shortness of breath, etc).
  • Draws arterial blood gases
  • Documents patient teaching as needed.
  • Monitors patients on mechanical ventilation and adjust settings per physician orders.
  • Documents endotracheal intubation and post intubation x-ray findings.
  • Responds to request for assistance with patients with respiratory distress in a timely fashion.
  • Must have ability to function autonomously.
  • Cooperates with all personnel in the proper conduct of the department.
  • Maintains ethical relationships.
  • Adheres to hospital and departmental rules and regulations.
  • Participates in in-service programs.
           REQUIRED EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS:
  •           Minimum of an A.A.S.  in Respiratory Care required
  •          Four (4) years of critical care experience preferred
  •         Licensed by the State of New York Education Department as a Respiratory Therapist required
  •          Registered by the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) required
  •           Member of the AARC (American Association for Respiratory Care) preferred

Physical Demands: 

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to communicate with patients, staff and medical providers.  The employee must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

Must have good visual acuity. 

Must have excellent hearing.

Must have sufficient manual dexterity of both arms and hands to draw arterial blood samples and perform endotracheal intubation. 

         Must have good oral communication skills.

·    Successfully complete a 4-panel drug screen*

·    Meet Regulatory Requirements for pre-employment screenings.

·    Provide a copy of any required New York State license(s)/certificate(s).
