PRN Pharmacist Intern

JOB SUMMARY
Reports to Pharmacy Operations Manager. Under the general supervision and work direction of staff pharmacists, the Pharmacist Intern performs and learns primary tasks associated with the practice of pharmacy in the preparation of becoming a pharmacist. Fills patient orders, floor stock, ancillary department supplies, and unit dose medication carts for terminal check by a registered pharmacist or certified pharmacy technician. Prepares IV admixture medications for pharmacist verification. Enters charges and credits onto patient profiles. Delivers patient medications from the pharmacy, returns orders,and other pharmacy-bound materials. Maintains drug stock within the pharmacy. Performs unit quality inspections. Obtains accurate home medication lists from patients entering the hospital and conveys that information to the appropriate care provider.

JOB REQUIREMENTS
Minimum Education
- Pharmacy student enrolled in accredited College/School of Pharmacy. High school diploma/GED.
- Licensed Pharmacist Intern in Kentucky in good standing with the Kentucky Board of Pharmacy required.Previous experience in hospital or community pharmacy highly desirable, evaluation period may be extended while on-the-job training occurs. Previous computer experience desirable. Familiarity with basic equipment such as typewriter, electronic calculator, etc.
- Knowledge and Skill: Follows general instructions. Understand several defined work routines. Reads various references, extract information, and applies basic arithmetic functions. May operate basic equipment.
- Knowledge of basic medical and pharmaceutical terminology and basic pharmacy calculations/equivalents required.
- Problem Solving/Decision Making: Makes decisions by reviewing defined alternatives. Receives assistance from standard procedures, coworkers and/or supervisor.
- Scope of Impact/Accountability: Impacts activities in other work areas on a frequent basis. Accountability is primarily indirect, nut may be shared for activities affecting the work area only. May provide information to decision-making processes affecting work area. While all technical functions are checked by a registered pharmacist, employee is accountable for maintaining considerable concentration and accuracy while performing job functions.
- Interpersonal Communication: Coordinates work with other. Conveys detailed, routine information. Provides written responses in standard format to others knowledgeable about the subject. Requires listening skills to maintain cooperative associations.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Delivers medications from pharmacy to nursing units.
Leaves pharmacy within 10 minutes of scheduled rounds and completes rounds within 15-20 minutes.
Delivers medication to proper unit, picks up orders, requisitions and other materials in out-box and handles transfer items properly.
Accurately fills requisitions, initial and dates sheets. Maintains proper stock in picking areas; removes any outdates discovered.
Performs the essential functions relating to drug purchasing and inventory control.
Checks that all items and tasks are completed by end of shift.
Fills list properly indicated with charges/credits. Medications filled in a timely manner.
Fills list initiated and dated when completed; left for computerized checking.
Accurately posts charges and credits in timely manner.
Assures patients are charge for proper drugs/quantities.
Delivers controlled substances to nursing units after pharmacist fills orders; obtains nursing signatures prior to leaving nursing unit.
Performs sorting and filing functions as needed. Prepares proof-of-use forms based on unit needs.
Picks up any expired/unusable narcotics from nursing units and returns to pharmacist for disposition.
Properly performs aseptic compounding of para=enteral admixtures and other sterile dosage forms.
Keeps ample stock prepared and ready, while minimizing waste and overstock.
Responsible for maintaining temperature logs and maintaining compliance with 797 regulations.
Drugs prepackaged properly; labeled correctly.
Prepackaging control logs maintained as required.
All prepackaging items submitted for pharmacist check prior to putting into stock.
Provides consistent performance in regards to medication errors and accuracy.
Uses appropriate judgment refers problems to pharmacist if needed.
Communicates effectively, does not leave assigned duties incomplete.
Organizes time effectively to meet changing workload demands.
Department as a whole meets cost initiative (perform under budget for fiscal year).
