Local Hybrid Remote Opportunity

Job Summary:

Manages the reimbursement functions relating to third party payors for the University of Chicago Medicine, and oversees staff and work for all aspects related to the reimbursement department and third-party cost reporting. This position also participates in the management of continuous and ad hoc Medicare and Medicaid-related projects, and is also responsible for the development and completion of specialized financial projects as assigned by the Executive Director of Strategic Reimbursement.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Manages the completion of third party cost reports and other filingrelated work, including the Medicare, Medicaid, Blue Cross and Champus cost reports.
  • Leads and oversees staff in the reimbursement department, and reviews the work of financial analysts to ensure timely and accurate preparation of documentation related to third party cost reports.
  • Represents the Medical Center and is the primary contact with the Medicare intermediary in matters concerning cost report preparation and audit information. Works with the Medicare intermediary and verifies that information and support of costs and reimbursement claimed are accurate. Provides work papers, explanations and documentation in a timely manner. Reviews adjustments and estimates impacts.
  • Analyzes and reviews cost report data throughout the year with the goal of continuously improving processes and what is reported to the third parties. Identifies areas which need extensive review and works with staff and others, including consultants, to make changes.
  • Maintains the preparation of Medicare Wage Index survey, Occupational Mix survey, and other required governmental surveys.
  • Works with Executive Director as “inhouse consultant” by researching reimbursement issues. Prepares impact of proposed regulation changes, powerpoint presentations and provides analysis on how things work.
  • Contributes to the month-end close process, and provides analysis and supporting documentation.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge through professional publications, contacts, seminars, teleconferences and other training; Promotes the sharing of information with staff during team meetings.
  • Participates in interviewing, selecting and orienting of new department personnel; Evaluates staff performance and conducts annual reviews.

Required Qualifications: 

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and/or a CPA certificate. Equivalent additional experience may substitute for educational / certification requirements.
  • Six(6) years experience in a progressively responsible analytical position in a health care environment required.
  • Logical, clear thinking and independent.
  • Able to articulate issues and defend positions in a professional and substantive manner. Excellent written and oral communication skills essential.Computer skills required, including knowledge of some combination of spreadsheet, word processing and database software.

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Minimum five (5) years of experience filing Medicare cost reports and knowledge of graduate medical education, organ acquisition, disproportionate share and other reimbursements associated with the annual filing is strongly preferred.
  • Prior experience filing IL (Illinois) Medicaid and BX cost reports
  • AR valuation experience
