DEPARTMENT SUMMARY: The St. Charles Health System's Inpatient Behavioral Health Departments provide services to the community and region including: treatment for the Serious and Persistent Mental Illness (SPMI) population, acute mental health crisis requiring hospitalization, and collaboration with the outpatient community at discharge.

POSITION OVERVIEW: The Behavioral Health Experiential Therapist develops, plans, implements, facilitates, directs and evaluates Experiential Therapy programming in all specialized treatment areas. The Experiential Therapist will have a working knowledge of a psychosocial functioning of patient/resident groups as well as application of expressive activities within a psychiatric setting. These include, but are not limited to, environmental activities, sports, dance, group initiatives, arts/crafts, music, outdoor activities, and art media.

The Experiential Therapist assists in meeting the psychosocial needs of patients and their families, to help patients utilize services to achieve optimum level of function and coordinate discharge planning in accordance with SCHS & Sage View mission, vision, values, success factors, philosophy, policies and procedures.This position does not directly manage other caregivers, however, may be asked to review and provide feedback on the work of other caregivers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES:

Monitors, consults and coordinates experiential therapy assessments, interventions and recommendations with each patient communicating observations in a timely and effective manner, verbally and in writing to members of the care team.

Facilitates experiential therapy groups daily and meets with those patients who do not attend group individually.

Respects the privacy and protects the confidentiality of patients while maintaining the boundaries of the professional role.

Function as a member of the Interdisciplinary Care Team to assure care is accomplished effectively and efficiently in a cost-effective manner.

Provides a therapeutic presence in service to others by purposefully responding to the needs of patients in a caring way, including introducing oneself and explaining role in patient's care, asking the patient his or her preferred name, sitting with the patient to determine his or her care goals, active listening, and communicating effectively and appropriately eye contact and body language.

Provides crisis intervention to patients and their families as needed.

Monitors and maintains patient and staff safety by assisting with rounds as needed.

Participates in Code Gray interventions as needed.

Supports the vision, mission and values of the organization in all respects.

Provides and maintains a safe environment for caregivers, patients and guests.

Complies with all applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures, supporting the organization's corporate integrity efforts by acting in an ethical and appropriate manner, reporting known or suspected violation of applicable rules, and cooperating fully with all organizational investigations and proceedings.

Delivers customer service and/or patient care in a manner that promotes goodwill, is timely, efficient and accurate.

May perform additional duties of similar complexity within the organization, as required or assigned.

EDUCATION

Required: Bachelor's degree in Counseling, Social Work or related field and currently enrolled in a Master's program. Must obtain a Master's degree within 2 years of hire.

Preferred: Master's degree in Counseling, Social Work or related field

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION
Required: Valid Oregon driver's license and ability to meet SCHS driving requirements.
Preferred: Current certification by the Therapeutic Recreation Specialist

EXPERIENCE

Required: Current knowledge of experiential therapy as related to physical disability and rehabilitation procedures, general medicine and mental health concepts. Understands the principles of team approach and recognizes capabilities and limitations of other team members.

Preferred: Experience as an experiential therapist. Experience in an inpatient psychiatric setting

PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT

Must be able to wear appropriate Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) required to perform the job safely.

Skills:

Member of a multi-disciplinary team that requires professional communication skills with different medical teams.

Ability to work in a fast past environment at times multi-tasking and triaging numerous needs of patients, their families and community agencies.

Ability to multi-task and work independently.

Attention to detail.

Excellent organizational skills, written and oral communication and customer service skills, particularly in dealing with stressful personal interactions.

Strong analytical, problem solving and decision making skills.

Basic to intermediate ability and experience in computer applications, use of electronic medical record keeping systems and MS Office.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Continually (75% or more): Standing and walking, keyboard operation, use of clear and audible speaking voice and the ability to hear normal speech level.

Frequently (50%): Sitting, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 1-25 pounds. The use and operation of a motor vehicle for Home Health and Wound Caregivers.

Occasionally (25%): Bending, stooping/kneeling/crouching, climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), reaching overhead, lifting/carrying/pushing or pulling 25-50 pounds, grasping/squeezing, ability to hear whispered speech level.

Rarely (10%): Climbing stairs.

Never (0%): Climbing ladder/step-stool (varies by area), operation of a motor vehicle.

Exposure to Elemental Factors

Rarely (10%): Wet/slippery area, chemical solution.

Never (0%): Heat, cold, noise, dust, vibration, uneven surface.
