Student Services Specialized Reading Coach

The Student Services Specialized Reading Coach is a member of the school staff designated by the Superintendent of Schools. The purpose of this position is to assist the Director of Student Services and Principals in all duties necessary for the proper and efficient operation of the development of specialized reading programming throughout the district. Under the supervision of the Director of Student Services, the Student Services Reading Coach oversees aspects of specialized reading instruction and reading programming K-8.

Prerequisites Training and Experience:

Minimum:
  • Master's Degree from an accredited institution in the field of Education.
  • Five years of special education or related experience at the level.
Experience working in a diverse educational setting, including the ability to work successfully with students, colleagues, and families from diverse ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic backgrounds.

Training and/or knowledge of various reading programs (Orton-Gillingham, Wilson Reading, Lindamood Bell).

Training and/or knowledge of various formal and informal reading assessments.

As determined by the Superintendent of Schools

Working Time:

The Student Services Specialized Reading Coach will be required to work 182.5 school days, at the discretion of the Superintendent, Assistant Superintendents, or Director of Student Services. The length of the workday will be 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Duties:

The Student Services Specialized Reading Coach shall:
  • Support and coach special education teachers to further develop skills in formal reading assessments, with up-to-date progress monitoring data collection; assist with appropriate student reading groupings;
  • Support principals and coordinators with transition processes of reading services and planning across buildings;
  • Assist in planning relevant and ongoing professional development related to literacy for special education staff, in conjunction with building principals;
  • Observe and provide feedback regarding the delivery of direct, explicit and data-driven instruction for special education students within the area of literacy; model lessons as needed;
  • Coach staff regarding student reading progress and help staff to adjust specialized reading instruction accordingly;
  • Coach staff with the implementation of highly individualized reading tutorials;
  • Support staff regarding new developments and trends in reading instruction as reflected in current research and experimentation;
  • Act as the liaison between literacy consultants and special education staff;
  • Collaborate with the Elementary and Secondary Student Services Coordinators to ensure consistent protocols and a continuum of services across the district;
  • Consult with the Assistant Superintendent or Assistant Director of Student services upon request for high profile cases;
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the Superintendent of Schools, Assistant Superintendents, Director of Student Services, and/or Assistant Director of Student Services.
