Stamford Health is hiring a fulltime Medical Oncology RN

This is an outpatient role, Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm

Responsibilities

The Staff Nurse in the Medical Oncology-Hematology Department is focused on supporting the physician and department to provide the highest level of care for the patient, performing nursing duties outside chemotherapy administration. The goal of the position is to relieve physicians of duties which are appropriate to nursing so that the physician may spend more time in clinical discussion with the patient, and so that responses to ancillary duties such as disability, home care and prescription related matters are handled at the appropriate level. The Staff Nurse creates a relationship with the patient to enhance care and communication, and to streamline that care process wherever possible. Utilizes the appropriate resources to plan and provide nursing services that are safe, effective and financially responsible.
  1. Assist with the physician visit by greeting the patient, and doing a preliminary assessment of physical and psychosocial condition and report to physician.
  2. Record reason for visit in EMR and update problem list.
  3. Take vital signs and record in EMR.
  4. Review Medication Reconciliation form and enter or correct medication list in EMR
  5. Turns over rooms between patients; stocks rooms and maintains adequate room supplies.
  6. Interfaces with oncology pharmacy (in house, specialty and retail) as required. Insures that prescriptions are refilled if required, with physician direction.
  7. Give sub-Q and IM injections; perform routine or therapeutic phlebotomies as required.
  8. Complete and/or process disability forms, homecare certifications, specialty pharmacy refill requests, etc.
  9. At physician direction, give clinical information to patients appropriate to the nursing scope of practice.
  10. Act as liaison between physician and other departments to coordinate patient care.
  11. Review and prepare consult information for effective physician visit.
  12. Serves as triage point for patient. Triages phone calls and patient condition. Refers to NP or MD or other department services as appropriate.
  13. Respects and protects patient rights and privacy.
Qualifications
  • Current RN license in CT or reciprocal state
  • Must have Minimum 3 years' experience in oncology
  • Associate's degree required, BSN preferred
  • Spanish language skills highly preferred.
  • Requires advanced knowledge of principles and practices within the field of nursing
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills to deal with critically and sometimes terminally ill cancer patients, as well as patients with hematologic disorders requiring ongoing management.
  • Should be familiar with OP office or hospital OP operations including billing and coding appropriate to nursing operations.
