The Resident Assistant(RA) is a full-time student who serves as a student leader on the ResidenceLife Staff. The RA position is vital tothe smooth operation of the residential community at Hardin-SimmonsUniversity. It is necessary for the RAto limit extracurricular activities and to seek permission for any part-timeemployment or other commitments. RAs are supervised by an assigned ResidenceDirector (RD) and service is based on a two-semester term.

Reporting directly to an assignedResidence Director (RD), RAs are para-professional student leaders who live inresidence and provide intentional programs and services, including theencouragement of holistic development of residents. The RA will function as aneducator and facilitator to provide residents with opportunities for growth,including interpreting and enforcing HSU policies and cultivating aChrist-Centered living area through building relationships with students thatfoster a sense of belonging to HSU's residential community.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

PRIMARYQUALIFICATIONS:

A committed disciple of Jesus Christ, with a heart for ministry and a desire to see the HSU campus grow spiritually.

Possess demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills, with a desire to learn and grow.

Ability to serve between 12-20 hours/week for the department of Residence Life.

PRIMARYRESPONSIBILITIES:

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

Learn and actively teach the five Residence Life Learning Outcomes through entire student staff role.
(1) Community Engagement & Sense of Belonging, (2) Interpersonal Development, (3) Spiritual Formation, (4) Identity & Goal Development, and (5) Cultivating Diverse Perspectives.

Spend approximately five hours each week building relationships through significant engagement with assigned residents.

Know each student resident in assigned area by name by no later than one month from the start of each semester.

Have a deepening relationship with each student resident in assigned area by no later than two months from the start of each semester.

Serve as a spiritual advisor/counsel and offer a bi-weekly Bible study either individually or with another Residence Life staff member.

In conjunction with supervising RD, plan, market, implement, and assess (1) floor programming, (2) all-living area programming, and (3) all-res life programming.

Plan and implement programming to promote the growth and development of students, including at least one active and one supporting event for assigned area each month.

Assist in the planning and implementation of one All-Living Area program per month and one All-Res Life program per semester.

Encourage, support, and be an active participant of group activities on floor, within the hall, between halls, and on the HSU campus.

Facilitate assessment and story/data communication for all assigned events.

Initiate contact with students who need support and be available and readily accessible to students throughout the week, including during times other than assigned duty nights.

Respond to requests from Residence Life, Student Engagement, First-Year Experience, Counseling Services, Campus Police, and other HSU staff or administration on issues of student care that may arise.

Have a strong familiarity with campus personnel, resources, and procedures; be able to convey this information to students, giving referrals as necessary.

Maintain confidentiality in all student care related matters.

Help promote good relations and communication between students, the RD, Residence Life Office Staff and University Administration.

Assist with posting and distribution of information and announcements to residents via word-of-mouth, paper postings, e-mail, and when needed, social media.

ADMINISTRATION

Selection & Training Activities

Attend all designated orientation activities.

Attend and actively participate in ALL Residence Life Student Staff Training and regularly scheduled Residence Life Professional Development Sessions, including but not limited to Fall (August) and Winter (January) retreats.

Assist in the selection and training of new Residence Life Student Leaders.

Weekly Responsibilities

Attend and actively participate in weekly staff meetings as scheduled by RD or Assistant Resident Director (ARD).

Meet individually with RD or ARD at least once per week to discuss student concerns, facilities issues, program planning & implementation, and personal/professional growth & development.

Participate in the duty schedule as assigned, including weekend/holiday duty.

Provide support, encouragement, and coverage for other staff members as needed.

Set in motion fire, accident, security, safety and emergency procedures as needed and submit incident reports to RD within twenty-four hours.

Complete all digital/paperwork promptly and accurately in accordance with the request of professional staff members.

Check mailbox, text, HSU Email, and voice mail regularly throughout the day and respond to work related requests with appropriate timeliness.

Update Beacon on each resident at least once a week.

Assist with the communication, tracking, and follow up of work orders to ensure their timely completion.

Student Conduct

Know, explain, & interpret HSU student policies and procedures as outlined in the HSU Student Handbook and Residence Life Handbook and set an example by adhering to those policies and procedures along with State and Federal Laws.

Enforce all HSU student policies and procedures in a fair and objective manner, while approaching all situations of conflict within the living area in a positive and restorative way.

Document and communicate all violations and follow-up within twenty-four hours using the Beacon reporting platform.

Participate in the Student Conduct Process as needed.

Maintain confidentiality in all student conduct related matters and keep supervising RD or ARD informed of all problems and concerns.

Other Responsibilities | Expectations

Conduct floor/area meetings with residents to discuss and explain policies, issues, and group concerns.

Assist with check-in/out of each term and complete associated digital/paper work AND be available to stay until all living area closing duties are complete for all terms (i.e. the day after graduation)

Distribute, collect, and assist in the completion of forms and surveys from the Residence Life Office.

Complete and submit an RA Monthly Report by the last week of each month or other designated time.

Facilitate room checks at least once per month as scheduled in conjunction with RD and ARD.

Assist as needed with Homecoming, Preview Days, and Round-Up events.

Fulfill other duties as assigned by the Department of Residence Life.

Overnight on-call (associated with desk shift compensation hours)

Bi-weekly Bible Study (Leading or hosting) participation

Remove myself from any social settings where people are consuming alcohol in excess and/or where underage drinking is taking place. (Each RD may offer additional guidelines on alcohol consumption to the student staff under his/her supervision)

Must make "Satisfactory Academic Progress" as defined in the HSU catalogue and maintain the required GPA (2.50) for my position each semester and cumulatively or risk loss of employment and termination of housing scholarship.

Not to put myself in positions, settings, and/or environments that could compromise my ability to effectively lead and/or represent HSU AND will strive to abstain from any behaviors that could call into question my ability to effectively lead and/or represent HSU.

Maintain proper physical and social relationships with residents under my supervision. There should be no overnight sleepovers where beds are shared in the RAs room.

Maintain consistent Chapel attendance, even if chapel requirements are met.

Maintain appropriate and professional presence on social media that reflect the character and values of Hardin-Simmons University as communicated in the student handbook. This includes but is not limited to sexually explicit content, promotion of alcohol or drug or paraphernalia, content contradictory to traditional Christian sexual ethics, cyber bullying, vulgar language or any other content deemed inappropriate by your immediate supervisor. Failure to remove any content deemed inappropriate could result in termination of the RA position.

Proper possession and use of building master keys for my living area and at times a housing grandmaster key for all living areas. RAs are authorized to only use it for purposes related to the job such as room checks. Inappropriate use or unauthorized possession may result in disciplinary sanctions including but not limited to termination from my RA position and status as a student at the university.

Residence Life will adjust the original position and location as hired if necessary, for the overall success of the Residence Life Program.

To accept this appointment, the agreement is subject to the policies and regulations of the university regarding cooperation with the administration, loyalty to the university and its mission, efficient performance of duties, worthy and exemplary conduct, agreement with policies, principles, and standards of the university.

COMPENSATION& COMMITTMENTS:

Compensation includes a Residence Hall Room for the Fall & Spring Semesters as well as up to 15 paid hours per week. All work hours are required to be reported on your online timecard per FLSA and DOL laws.

Training and Leadership Development along with resume worthy para-professional experience.

Mentoring relationships with Residence Directors and other staff members.

Due to the commitment needed for this position, each RA is expected to maintain a schedule that allows for balance, personal wellness, and ample time to fulfill their responsibilities to the position. This role is to be viewed as second only to academics. These additional activities or responsibilities must be PRE-APPROVED by their supervisors and must not interfere with their RA role.

After seeking pre-approval from their supervisor, RAs are expected to spend no more than 15 hours in off-campus jobs and/or other extracurricular involvements.

It is preferred RAs do not hold any other paid student worker position at Hardin-Simmons University. However, any additional position would have to be approved by the supervisor.

Resident Assistants are not permitted to serve as First-Year Mentors, Stampede Leaders, SWAT members, and/or Steering Committee members due to the inherent conflict in time commitments these roles require.

The Resident Assistant position is for one academic year beginning in August 2023 and terminates at the close of finals in Spring 2024.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5.

Completed one year of college and at least one semester of residential experience.

In good judicial standing with the University.

Enrolled as a Full-Time student at Hardin-Simmons University.
