Job Title: District Behavior Specialist
Department/Group: Teacher
Position Summary/Purpose: The district behavior specialist serves as a district-wide specialist who collaborates closely with school leaders, offering crucial positive behavioral instructional support for district staff at the Tier 1 level. This strategic approach empowers educators and social workers with the tools and expertise necessary to identify students in crisis and implement targeted interventions to address their needs promptly and effectively. By leveraging the insights and guidance, our district provides a consistent and comprehensive support system. This system runs through every level, from individual students to entire school buildings and across the district as a whole. Additionally, this addresses the pressing demand for student wellness and supportive learning environments. The district behavior specialist also provides crisis intervention as well as individual and group intervention services supporting mental health issues for students, school personnel and community/family. District 83 is committed to implementing programs designed to enhance SEL practices, bolstered by the support of a Tier 1 behavior specialist.
Role and Responsibilities/Essential Job Functions:
Professional Development: Providing training and workshops on positive behavior management strategies, such as classroom organization, effective communication, and behavior intervention techniques.
- Classroom teachers
- Special area teachers, Special education teachers, paraprofessionals, service providers
- Lunch/Recess monitors
- Bus Drivers
- Support Staff
Creating Classroom Management Plans: Collaborating with teachers to create classroom management implementation as well as individualized behavior plans for students with challenging behaviors. These plans outline strategies for promoting positive behaviors and addressing issues as they arise.
Modeling Strategies: Demonstrating effective behavior management techniques in the classroom, such as positive reinforcement, proactive discipline, and de-escalation strategies.
Resource Provision: Providing teachers with resources, such as books, articles, and online tools, to help them better understand and address behavior issues.
Data Collection and Analysis: Assisting teachers in collecting and analyzing data on student behavior to identify patterns, triggers, and progress towards behavior goals. Rush SEL web data to analyze with Differentiation Specialist and grade level teams.
Collaboration with Other Professionals: Collaborating with other professionals, such as school counselors, psychologists, and special education teachers, to develop comprehensive support plans for students with complex behavioral needs. This can be done during PLCs, SIT meetings, Faculty meetings
Building a Positive School Culture: Working with teachers to create a positive and supportive school culture through initiatives such as school-wide behavior expectations, recognition programs, and community-building activities.
Qualifications and Education Requirements:
- Illinois Professional Educator License with School Support Personnel endorsement in School Social Work or Licensed Professional Counselor
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Commitment to equity, diversity, and inclusion in education.
- As a multi-language district, we always prefer staff who are bilingual but it is not required for this position
Physical Demands: mobility within the instructional area and throughout the school facility, visual acuity close/distance/depth perception, hearing to receive information, verbal to exchange information. Physical demands often include walking, sitting, bending, twisting, stooping, reaching forward, lifting up to 25 pounds, pushing and pulling.
Environmental Conditions: indoor climate-controlled office environment
