The role:

We are seeking a Sr. Director of Software Engineering to join the SoFi Platform team. At SoFi, our ambition is to help our members achieve financial independence and reach their goals. We aim to be at the center of our members’ financial lives and to help every member get their money right.

SoFi platform aspires to empower every individual at SoFi through technology (services, UX enablers and tools) to innovate and iterate faster at scale and deliver helpful member experiences. As a senior engineering leader, you will own, help define and run broad, complex, long-term horizontal technical initiatives that power every current and future SoFi product. This high-visibility role is central to the success of SoFi and will require you to collaborate across organizational boundaries with cross-functional leaders in engineering, product, design, business, risk, operations, privacy, legal, support, and other critical functions to drive the strategy and execution of platform initiatives and communicate with senior executives and other stakeholders.

You will lead engineering teams and other senior technical leaders, to build product enablers that drive SoFi-wide growth and engagement. Your work will impact critical product surface areas such as onboarding, account creation, relationships, and member communications. You will also play a key role in preserving members’ trust and safety by building technology that ensures members’ identity, financial assets, and data are safe and protected. The ideal candidate for this role will have a deep intuition for complex technological initiatives that enable product development organizations and other functions, a high sense of ownership, tenacity, curiosity, and the ability to align and mobilize large organizations to achieve strategic outcomes. Top-notch communication, the ability to collaborate and partner, and deliver programs that improve SoFi's foundational technology strength will be key to success in this role.  As a Sr. Director of engineering, we look to you to set big, ambitious goals, be gritty, and hold yourself and your cross-functional teams accountable to deliver results on behalf of our members.

What you’ll do:

  • Lead a high-performing development team to design, implement and operate against all portions of an entire SoFi product line. 
  • Define strategy for an entire organization through continued expansion, production delivery, and a sustained high pace of new feature development. 
  • Collaborate closely with Product Management on features to ensure the product is delivered to SoFi customers.
  • Guide the organization through continued expansion, production delivery, and a sustained high pace of new feature development. 
  • Mentor and grow technical leadership on the team while ensuring a high-quality culture is maintained.
  • Make critical decisions regarding technology selection, the balance of feature and operational priorities, and setting high standards for quality and on-time delivery.
  • Define and execute meaningful performance and operational SLAs that capture our customer experience.
  • Generate, enhance, and promote ideas for useful new projects and technologies.

What you’ll need:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or equivalent from a fully-accredited college or university
  • 10+ years of Java (or another Object-Oriented Programming language) experience
  • 8+ years prior experience in an engineering people management position
  • 4+ years of experience managing multiple teams/managers or leads 
  • Working knowledge of Web development 
  • Familiarity with w/AWS and at-scale services 
  • Solid understanding of relational databases (MySQL or Postgres) 
  • Experience managing teams operating across multiple offices
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced and Agile development environment 
  • Work and play well with others; SoFi is a collaborative environment 

Nice to have:

  • Master or PhD in Computer Science or Engineering
  • Financial services experience.
