Job Description:

Budget Title: Senior Staff Assistant (SL-3)

Salary: $70,000

Binghamton University Community Schools (BUCS) an initiative housed in Binghamton University's College of Community and Public Affairs (CCPA) promotes the adoption of the University Assisted Community School model in K-12 schools and school districts locally, regionally and nationally. BUCS has been awarded two five-year grants designed to educate the next generation of school-based mental health providers serving youth and families in high needs schools. To achieve this goal, BUCS works collaboratively with CCPA's Department of Social Work Field Education Office to place social work student interns (known as BUCS Social Work Fellows) in high needs school districts in Broome and Tioga counties. BUCS School Mental Health Site Supervisors deliver and facilitate didactic instruction along with on-site instruction where BUCS Social Work Fellows implement in-person and virtual interventions that address and improve the mental health of youth and their families. The School Mental Health Assistant Clinical Director fulfills the role of Field Instructor for the BUCS Social Work Fellows. The BUCS School Mental Health Assistant Clinical Director is supervised by the School Mental Health Clinical Director. Duties of the BUCS School Mental Health Assistant Clinical Director include:
  • Assist the BUCS School Mental Health Clinical Director to lead the Rural Mental Health in Schools Expansion Initiative and the Family Partner Program:
    • Understand the proposals and deliverables associated with the projects.
    • Perform operational tasks to reach outlined timeline and outcomes of the projects.
  • Provide required field instruction and clinical supervision to BUCS Social Work Fellows:
    • Understand the 9 core competencies delineated by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE) and the dimensions of practice within each competency.
    • Support BUCS Social Work Fellows in identifying and performing behaviors that demonstrate growth in the core competencies. Be proficient and able to share examples of behaviors that demonstrate the core competencies and associated tasks to practice developing skills.
    • Provide 1 hour of weekly individual clinical supervision to the BUCS Social Work Fellows during the academic year. To ensure coordinated supervision and consistent messaging, one clinical supervision hour per month, at minimum, must include the Site Supervisor.
    • Work with Site Supervisors and BUCS Social Work Fellows to clarify expectations of the internship experience as a critical experience within the scope of the mental health projects.
    • Collaborate with Site Supervisors to support BUCS Social Work Fellows to develop their skills in the core competencies. Provide innovative ideas on tasks for BUCS Social Work Fellows to complete to support learning at the various stages of their skill development.
    • Support BUCS Social Work Fellows as they implement a variety of programs and activities in local school districts that promote socioemotional well-being and mental health of youth and families.
    • Help BUCS Social Work Fellows apply effective social work practices, and reflect on the connection between the Social Work curriculum and their field experiences and observations.
    • Work with Site Supervisors and BUCS Social Work Fellows to complete required learning plans, mid-term and final field evaluations. Provide ongoing feedback and participate in field liaison meetings with the Site Supervisor and BUCS Social Work Fellow.
    • Facilitate and support BUCS Social Work Fellows by engaging in difficult conversations when challenges arise. Work in collaboration with Site Supervisors and the Field Office staff to develop 'supportive action plans' when needed.
    • Fulfill role and tasks of field instructor for BUCS Fellows in Tevera and/or other data collecting programs.
  • Assist in development and facilitation of orientation, "bootcamp" and monthly in-service training for BUCS Social Work Fellows:
    • Partner with the School Mental Health Clinical Director to develop the calendar and curriculum for BUCS Social Work Fellows and general project implementation.
    • Identify training needs to support growth of BUCS Social Work Fellows and Site Supervisors.
  • Participate in planning and implementation of outreach events, conferences and other opportunities to share information and fulfill the BUCS mission.
  • Provide support and assistance to Site Supervisors and partnering schools to ensure continued presence in the districts and ongoing implementation of the mental health projects.
  • Assist with data collection when necessary and as required by the School Mental Health grants.
  • Work in collaboration with the BUCS implementation team, including Graduate Assistants (GAs) to ensure project deliverables are met and targeted initiatives are completed.
  • Assist the BUCS School Mental Health Clinical Director.

Requirements:

  • Master's degree in Social Work with two years of experience supervising social work interns
  • Two years of experience working with schools
Preferred:
  • Master's degree in Social Work, Licensed Clinical Social Work (LCSW) degree
  • Two years of clinical practice experience
