Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner

BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY
Function as an Advanced Practice Nurse and change agent incorporating the primary role of nurse practitioner and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes for adult Gastroenterology patients.
CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assure clinical competency and expertise in area of specialization.
- Function independently and/or as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver and evaluate health care for motility disorder patients.
- Collaborate with nursing staff/nursing administration to monitor and evaluate the quality of patient care.
- Determine nursing care requirements and develop programs for motility disorder patients, with regard to patient condition and age, and follow universal precautions.
- Promote health maintenance that spans the continuum of health from outpatient to inpatient settings and back to the home care arena.
- Perform medical diagnostic, therapeutic procedures, and prescribe, dispense or deliver medications when a collaborative practice agreement is in place.
- Preform procedure consent and history and physicals (H&P) in DHC procedure unit as desired.
- Maintain responsibility for obtaining patient history and physical, and obtaining procedure consents in the Digestive Health Center procedure unit.
- Provide anticipatory guidance and counseling to patients/families.
- Document patient assessment and plan of care in the medical record and generate appropriate health reports for outgoing correspondence.
- Initiate and coordinate referrals to other health care team members or agencies.
- Serve in a consultative resource capacity by providing expert knowledge and behavioral skills that impact clinical practice and patient outcomes.
- Participate in the development, utilization and evaluation of resources to meet patient/family educational needs.
- Provide education and serve as a resource for nursing staff in area of clinical expertise.
- Provide education to external agencies, community and other health professionals.
- Generate research questions regarding health care for particular patient populations.
- Incorporate research findings into practice.
- Participate in development and implementation of divisional and departmental quality assessment/improvement/research programs and processes.
- Responsible for administrative activities and special projects as assigned.
- Contribute toward the achievement of divisional and departmental goals.
- Participate and contribute to activities that enhance clinical expertise and nursing knowledge.
- Participate in professional nursing activities in the department, hospital, community and professional organizations.
- Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students and the public.
- Establish and maintain standards of collaborative interaction among peers and employees that is characterized by respect, honesty and service; assure that all unit members are held to similar standards and ethics; constructively manages conflict.
- Manage the talents, strengths and behaviors of each individual in a diverse work group, while providing each employee with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the unit. Work to assure that all employees are respected and treated consistent with University policies in regard to equal employment opportunity and diversity.
- Inspire and motivate others to high performance by exercising strong stewardship of University resources, setting expectations, measuring success through individual performance evaluations, and driving organizational results.
- Identify opportunities for and creates development plans that encourage employees to attend to the growth of their personal and professional capacity; engage self and staff in collective reflection of the University's greater role in society.
The department intends to hire for one position as either an ARNP, requisition 24003670 or PA, requisition 24003668, based on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Please apply to the specific position for which you which to be considered or both.
QUALIFICATIONS
- A Master's degree is required. A Master's degree in Nursing is preferred. If Master's degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required.
- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa is required.
- Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in state of Iowa is required.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required.
- Demonstrated experience in area of clinical practice is required.
- Demonstrated experience in GI is desired.
