Software Development Engineer

SUMMARY:
  • The main function of a software engineer is to apply the principles of computer science and mathematical analysis to the design, development, testing, and evaluation of the software and systems that make computers work. A typical software engineer researches, designs, develops and tests operating systems-level software, compilers, and network distribution software for medical, industrial, military, communications, aerospace, business, scientific and general computing applications.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Review and approve the modification of existing databases and database management systems
  • Instruct staff to write and code logical and physical database descriptions and specify identifiers of database to management system
  • Direct database development and approve project scope and limitations
  • Review project requests describing database user needs to estimate time and cost required to accomplish project
  • Plan, coordinate, and implement security measures to safeguard information in computer files against accidental or unauthorized damage, modification, or disclosure
  • Approve, schedule, plan and supervise the installation and testing of new products and improvements to computer systems
  • Develop standards and guidelines to guide the use and acquisition of software and to protect vulnerable information
Typical Day in the Role:
  • Purpose of the Team: A cybersecurity team that does threat intelligence and defense engineering for Microsoft. They run the Security & Information Event Management (SIEM) platform that encompasses network security monitoring, detection analytics with enrichment, and threat intelligence services. Our goal is to provide real-time threat visibility, early detection, and rapid response capabilities to safeguard Microsoft's network, infrastructure, and services
  • Key Projects: They need to increase the amount of telemetry they are getting from the MSFT network - huge initiative to understand better how the MSFT network works. It's a software engineering profile but need to have networking experience and security
  • Ex: if they get telemetry from a firewall - candidate needs to understand how firewall works and what are the most important network protocols and ports. Why this port has been blocked? Etc. This goes beyond just code experience
  • Typical Task Breakdown and Operating Rhythm: The role will consist of o 25% meetings (large initiatives talking with different stakeholders making decisions), 75% heads down (have a backlog of tasks which are assigned to the individuals). There is planned work for the most part, but sometimes have un-planned urgent work needed at times

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Verbal and written communication skills, problem solving skills, customer service and interpersonal skills
  • Strong ability to work independently and manage one's time
  • Strong mentoring skills necessary to provide support and constructive performance feedback
  • Strong knowledge of the full software development lifecycle: from business/systems analysis, through requirements gathering and functional specification authoring, to development, testing and delivery
  • Strong ability to troubleshoot issues and make system changes as needed to resolve issue
  • Strong knowledge of computer hardware and software
  • Knowledge of computer development software as it relates to systems, such as SQL, VisualBasic, etc.
Education/Experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, software engineering or relevant field required
  • 8-10 years' experience required

  • Years of Experience Required: 8-10 overall years of experience in the field
  • Degrees or Certifications Required: Bachelor's in computer science or similar field. Interested in candidates who have cyber security CISSP or cyber security certificate - to highlight a cyber security mindset/background
  • Disqualifiers: N/A
  • Best vs. Average: The ideal resume would contain someone who is able to ramp up quick and deal with crisis's that come up / be able to drop current tasks to take on urgent tasks that come up. Support operations. Be able to react fast and have versatility and attention to detail. Someone who has done both cyber security and network
  • Performance Indicators: Performance will be assessed based on meeting deadlines and quality of work

What are the top required coding languages for this role? What other languages might be considered in lieu of those specified? C sharp, Kusto Query Language (KQL), Python with Synapse. Azure data and Log analytics and web-based technologies.
In lieu of those specified - if they have front-end technology experience which is also a plus Does your team operate in an Agile/Scrum/Waterfall environment? Everything is Agile and everything is split into sprints
