IT Student Assistant

SUMMARY
Under general direction of the IT Director or assigned supervisor, the candidate selected for the entry level position IT Student Assistant will have the aptitude to install, maintain and troubleshoot computer workstation, printers, scanners, registers, and applications assigned as part of their daily tasks. The candidate will assist the IT team to provide a high level of service to support our end-users with their technological needs including Windows and Mac computers, portable devices, and office electronics. Furthermore, the IT Student Assistant is responsible for maintaining and updating tasks in the IT ticketing system and making recommendations on hardware and software upgrades to keep network systems current. This position also assists the IT team with various projects and tasks and must be able to communicate clearly and effectively while working with staff.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Typical functions may include any of the following tasks, knowledge, abilities, and other characteristics. Incumbent(s) may not be required to perform all duties listed and may be required to perform additional, position-specific tasks.
- Technical support: provide prompt and efficient technical support to end-users through various communication channels (phone, email, chat) regarding hardware, software, and network-related problems including mobile technology devices.
- Troubleshooting: identify and diagnose technical issues, determining the root cause of problems and implementing appropriate solutions. This may involve remote troubleshooting or on-site visits.
- Help desk management: monitor the ticketing system and ensure accurate and detailed documentation of issues and resolutions by IT analysts.
- System maintenance: work with IT analysts to perform maintenance tasks such as software updates, system backups and security patches to ensure optimal performance and security of computer systems.
- User training and guidance: conduct training sessions and provide user guidance on basic computer operations, software applications, and IT security best practices to enhance end-user knowledge and productivity.
- Network support: support network connectivity issues, including troubleshooting network equipment (routers, switches, network cables), and assisting with network configuration and administration (wired and wireless).
- Documentation: document and maintain internal IT processes as well as How-To guides for end users.
- IT asset management: track and manage IT assets, including inventory management, software licensing and equipment maintenance.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Work is performed in a typical office environment with prolonged periods of work on a computer and regular contact with others.
TYPICAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS - Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
Sit for extended periods; manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination; lift and move objects weighing up to 50lbs.; verbal and written communication; use of office equipment (i.e. computers, printers, copiers, scanners, etc).
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS:
- Working knowledge of various terminologies and principles related to IT.
- Excellent customer service and communication skills with a willingness to learn.
- Basic to intermediate knowledge of the following: operating systems Microsoft Windows and macOS; Microsoft Office applications; printer/scanner setup and use; smartphone or mobile device operations.
- Ability to:
- Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing
- Quickly learn and apply concepts and procedures related to assigned IT tasks.
- Work with confidential information.
- Organize work, set priorities, meet critical deadlines and follow-up on assignments.
- Observe safe work methods and safety practices related to the tasks.
Currently enrolled in 6 units for undergraduate or 4 units as a graduate student at California State University, Chico.
Preferred Requirements:
- Experience working as an IT help desk technician or in a similar customer role.
- Demonstrated work experience in the computer related field or the ability to.
- Shows the maturity and skills to be a student team lead.
