Position Summary

Aligned to a human-centered design approach, implements Human Systems Integration (HSI) methodology and processes, manages HSI requirements, performs Human Factor Engineering (HFE) assessments, and represents HSI interests in the Commercial space station High Fidelity Mock-up (HFM) definition and implementation.

Position Responsibilities

  • Contributes to commercial space station HSI methodology and processes defined in the HSI plan and to the HSI products and tasks required for the different (sub-)system milestones leading up to system critical design review (CDR).
  • Contributes to achievement of program milestones, providing HSI inputs, analyses or trade-offs, to the HSI work group.
  • Contributes to the Commercial space station RFI/RFP process by providing HSI inputs and reviewing the answers.
  • Contributes to the Commercial space station HSI Standard (requirements), by defining and verifying the close-out of these requirements in Commercial space station's requirements tool, Jama. Explains these requirements to team members from the different disciplines and ensures their correct allocation and implementation.
  • Contributes to the Commercial space station Human Centered Design conceptual framework.
  • Provides HSI inputs, including anthropometrics and HFE perspectives, to the system architecture, CONOPS, function allocation and design.
  • Participates in iterative Task Analyses (TA) / Human Error Analyses (HEA) led by the Human Tasks Analysts as defined in the TA / HEA plan, from definition of high-level tasks for PDR to detailed tasks for CDR, taking into account the workload evaluation as defined in the workload evaluation plan. These analyses and evaluations are executed with the Commercial space station's Model Base System Engineering (MBSE) tool, Cameo.
  • Contributes to Commercial space station "Human-In-the-Loop" (HITL) evaluations (definition, preparation, execution, analyses, test subject identification and recruitment) to evaluate TA/HEA and Workload evaluations. These HITL studies are mainly executed in Houston, TX, USA.
  • Compiles the results of HSI analyses and evaluations and provides recommendations relevant to system requirements, functions, CONOPS, MSOR, design, OPS, etc., to be presented during Engineering Review Board (ERB) at each iteration.
  • Performs Station habitability analysis.
  • Performs anthropometrics assessments with dedicated tools (VR, CAD, body data base, etc.).
  • Supports the implementation of Commercial space station Human Machine Interfaces standards within the system.
  • Implement the Commercial space station label plan.
  • Contributes to physical and virtual mockup use case definitions and implementation, including expected fidelity and functionality.
  • Contributes to needs and constraints identification for the HFM in coordination with the different disciplines.
  • Considers the different uses of the mockup for HITL evaluation, but also operational products validations, crew training, validation of future station upgrades or translation paths.
  • As needed, advises HFM suppliers in all the phases (design, manufacturing, assembly, integration, test, and on-site installation validation).
  • Regulates and supports usage of the HFM by the different disciplines.
  • Maintains the different mockups and their outfitting elements, including configuration management and differences between the real station and each mockup.
  • Implements mockups and outfitting elements fidelity and / or functionality upgrades over time, while keeping a continuous configuration management system and the differences with the real station.
  • Contributes to Commercial space station Human Spaceflight Certification, Verification and Validation, and Safety processes, by providing ad-hoc HSI inputs.
  • Manages all data in accordance with the Commercial space station Data Management, Security, Privacy, and Export Control rules.

Qualifications

Education:
  • Equivalency of Bachelor's degree (required) or Master's degree (preferred) in an applicable STEM field.
Experience:
  • Equivalency of five years specific relevant experience in systems integration with spacecraft human systems conceptualization, design, development, integration.
  • Familiarity with existing human spaceflight systems elements to include general habitability, crew quarters (permanent and temporary), Hygiene provisions, On-board audio, camera, and video communications equipment, Food preparation and galley, Housekeeping equipment, Emergency equipment and Personal Protection Equipment, Waste and trash management, On-board stowage provision, Crew restraints and mobility aids, Maintenance and tools, Illumination (area and task lighting), On-board recreation and Entertainment
Knowledge, Skills, Demonstrated Capabilities:
  • Ability to coordinate CSS elements with Commercial space station subsystems (Thermal, Power, Electrical, ECLSS, Payloads, etc.)
  • English fluency in speech and writing is required.
  • German and further languages are beneficial.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently and with limited oversight in the given area of expertise.
  • Ability to manage a team that is comprised of contractors and key suppliers.
  • Ability to multitask and prioritize work while ensuring all assigned tasks progress.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Technical Systems Proficiency:
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office environment is a MUST
  • Experience with CAD or simulation S/W is beneficial
  • Experience with MBSE tools (e.g. Cameo) is beneficial
  • Experience with Confluence is beneficial
  • Experience with requirements tools such as DOORS and JAMA is beneficial
Travel Required:
  • Up to 20% travel required

  • Travel: able to travel independently and at short notice.
  • Walking: able to walk through office and production areas including uneven surfaces.
