General Description

We are looking for Lateral Single Role Paramedics

Albany Fire Department is accepting applications for multiple vacant Single Role Paramedic-Lateral positions and to establish an eligibility list for future openings. These positions are regular, full-time, and are represented by the International Association of Fire Fighters (IAFF).

A lateral paramedic is one who has completed two years of full-time paid experience and is in good standing with their current/most recent fire agency.

Applications will be reviewed as received and initial virtual interviews will take place weekly or biweekly. Applicants considered for an initial virtual interview will be notified via email. Visit

Schedule:Single role positions currently work a rotating schedule of 48 hours one week, followed by 36 hours the next week, with overtime paid for any hours over 40 hours in a work week.

Performs emergency aid activities in accordance with department standing orders, including driving ambulances, administering advanced life support (ALS) treatment within applicable scope as authorized in the Linn/Benton County Clinical Guidelines, and transports patients. Supports the Life Safety Division's programs through public education and community outreach; performs related work as required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/REVIEW OF WORK

The single-role paramedic works under the guidance of duty battalion chief or lieutenant and under general supervision of a deputy chief.
Essential Functions/Duties & Responsibilities

The duties listed are intended only as illustrative examples of the various types of work that may be performed by individuals in this classification. Any of the following duties may be performed. These examples are not necessarily performed by all incumbents and do not include all specific essential functions and responsibilities the incumbent may be expected to perform.

  1. Responds to non-emergency and emergency medical responses; operates within the Incident Command System; and provides ALS/BLS level emergency medical care and transportation between medical facilities.
  2. Completes electronic medical documentation for each patient encounter in a complete, competent, and timely manner.
  3. Protects the privacy of all patient information in accordance with department privacy policies, procedures, and practices as required by federal and state law, and in accordance with general principles of professionalism as a healthcare provider.
  4. May access Protected Health Information (PHI) and other patient information only to the extent that it is necessary to complete job duties.
  5. Determines appropriate actions to take during emergency response activities and in performing program area activities or duties as assigned. May be the lead paramedic at emergency scenes and as such will provide direction to others in the coordination of patient care.
  6. Performs job duties in compliance with department operating procedures and city, county, state, and federal laws, and ordinances.
  7. Establishes, promotes, and maintains positive working relationships while promoting the fire department's mission, vision, and value statements.
  8. Maintains apparatus, equipment, and facilities to ensure safe, efficient, and effective operations.
  9. Performs housekeeping and minor repairs to department equipment, apparatus, facilities, and grounds.
  10. Operates radio and other communication equipment.
  11. Represents the City of Albany by responding to the public, citizens, its employees, and others in a prompt, professional, and courteous manner while continuously maintaining a positive customer service demeanor. Regards everyone, internal and external, as a customer and deliver the best service possible in a respectful and patient manner.
  12. Serves as a member of various City committees as assigned.
  13. Assists other staff in the performance of their duties as assigned and provides training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
  14. Maintains regular job attendance and adherence to working hours.
  15. Operates a motor vehicle safely and legally.
  16. Performs other related duties as required/assigned.

Supervision/Lead Work Exercised

This is a non-supervisory position. Lead work/coordination of the work of others is not a typical function assigned to this position. Incumbents in this position will provide training and orientation to newly assigned personnel.
Qualifications & Requirements

Education and Experience:

High school diploma or its equivalent and graduation from an accredited paramedic program. One or more years of work experience as a Paramedic with a career or volunteer fire department or private EMS agency, or successful completion of a student or EMS internship with the Albany Fire Department is preferred. An associate degree in emergency medical technology or fire service is preferred. Any other equivalent combination of experience/training that ensures the ability to perform the work requirements listed above.

Special Requirements:
  1. Must have a current state of Oregon Paramedic certification.
  2. Possession of or ability to obtain a valid Oregon driver's license.
  3. Must meet the City's physical qualifications and pass a background check, medical and psychological exams, and drug screen prior to appointment at the entry level.
  4. Preference may be given for Spanish language bilingual skills.
  5. Use of tobacco products is prohibited subject to applicable agency policy and/or collective bargaining agreement.
  6. The individual shall not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of themselves or others.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Knowledge of: principles, practices, and procedures of EMS; geography of the district and Ambulance Service Area (ASA); the operation and maintenance of the various types of apparatus and equipment used by the department.

Skill in: operation of listed tools and equipment used.

Ability to: learn the operation of EMS and other equipment; perform strenuous physical tasks under adverse environmental conditions; act effectively in emergency and stressful situations; follow verbal and written instructions; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; understand and carry out written and oral instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, other departments, and the public; operate computers for data entry.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The employee will work outside in day or night weather conditions, congested traffic, and unsafe road conditions. In the performance of the job duties, will work in atmospheres that are an immediate danger to life and health; may work near moving mechanical parts and in high, precarious places, and with explosives, and may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; vibration; risk of electrocution, extreme heat or cold; chemical, biological, radiological, nuclear, or explosive hazards.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, except during certain EMS activities when noise levels may be loud. Must be able to work all shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The factors described herein are representative of, but not all-inclusive of, those that must be met by an individual to successfully perform the job. The work is heavy work which requires exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Balancing: sufficient to maintain body equilibrium to prevent falling while walking, standing or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces. The amount of balancing exceeds that needed for ordinary locomotion and maintenance of body equilibrium.
  • Climbing: sufficient to ascend or descend ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps, poles and the like, using feet and legs and/or hands and arms. Body agility is emphasized.
  • Crouching: sufficient to bend the body downward and forward by bending leg and spine.
  • Feeling: sufficient to perceive attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Fingering: sufficient to pick, pinch, type, or otherwise work, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Grasping: sufficient to apply pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling: sufficient to pick, hold, or otherwise work, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Hearing: sufficient to perceive the nature of sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and to make the discrimination in sound.
  • Kneeling: sufficient to bend legs at knee to come to a rest on knee or knees.
  • Lifting: sufficient to raise objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally from position-to-position. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires substantial use of upper extremities and back muscles.
  • Mental Acuity: sufficient to make rational decisions through sound logic and deductive processes.
  • Pulling: sufficient to use upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Pushing: sufficient to use upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward.
  • Reaching: sufficient to extend hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Repetitive Motion: Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
  • Speaking: sufficient to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word including the ability to convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately and concisely.
  • Standing: Particularly for sustained periods of time.
  • Stooping: sufficient to bend body downward and forward by bending spine at the waist. Occurs to a considerable degree and requires full motion of the lower extremities and back muscles.
  • Talking: sufficient to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word including those activities in which they must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly.
  • Visual Acuity: sufficient to observe violations of codes, to effectively operate standard office equipment; ability to read and write reports, correspondence, instructions, drawings, etc.; and to operate motor vehicles and/or heavy equipment, by both day and night.
  • Walking: sufficient to move about on foot to accomplish tasks, particularly for long distances or move from one work site to another.
TOOLS & EQUIPMENT USEDIn the performance of job duties, the employee will use ambulance and related vehicles; patient care, moving, and handling equipment and devices; computer and various software programs; calculator; digital camera; telephone; cellular telephone; radio communication equipment; pager; copy and fax machines; and other related tools and equipment.

Safety Equipment:

This is not an exhaustive list. Hearing protection (including earmuffs), safety glasses, steel toed boots, gloves (nitrile, latex, leather), hardhat, knee pads, a variety of facial coverings, traffic cones, safety vest, fall-restraint equipment when required. Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA), and in all situations, required full Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). Develops safe work habits and contributes to the safety of self, co-workers, and the general public.
