The job of Transportation Coordinator was established for the purpose/s of communicating with school administrators, parents, other district departments, bus company personnel, and the Danbury Public School District for establishing bus routes and stops; resolving district transportation issues; arranging transportation for special events; issuing transportation passes and serving as lead in the development of routes for students and maintaining and operating a variety of computer software programs in support of the district's student transportation system.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Liaison person between the Board of Education, Parents, Registration Center and Bus Company for student transportation.
  • Coordinates, prepares, updates and communicates all bus routes for all public and non-public schools from kindergarten through 12th grade for all students including special education, vocational programs, and summer programs.
  • Maintains budget for summer school transportation, and coordinates routes and other related programs.
  • Coordinates out-of-district transportation for special education students in conjunction with Pupil Service staff.
  • Administers transportation system (e.g. answers inquiries, refers problems to data processing or vendor, installs new software, beta tests, etc.) for the purpose of providing system support to the Transportation Department.
  • Ensures the accuracy of communicated bus runs for annual publication
  • Coordinates and enters data into the computerized transportation system (e.g. street names, speed limits, stops, hazards, walking boundaries, left and right turn directions, student data, new and changed school boundary information, etc.) for the purpose of creating route maps.
  • Prepares and maintains daily log relative to transportation problems and submit a monthly summary of transportation efficiency.
  • Recommends route additions and changes (e.g. finds new development and map information, etc.) for the purpose of keeping routes and data up-to-date.
  • Maintains student enrollment for both public and parochial schools and disseminates all related reports.
  • When requested, meet with principals and parents to discuss and solve transportation problems.
  • Communicates with drivers, Bus Company personnel, special education department, school staff, parents, and others (e.g. reviewing route maps, responding to inquiries, etc.) for the purpose of assisting with route-related problems.
  • Responds to inquiries from students, parents, and staff (e.g. stop locations, schedule, state-regulated policies, etc.) for the purpose of providing the necessary information regarding busing issues.
  • When requested, does preliminary investigation of bus route modification requests in conjunction with the bus company. Recommends resolution/approval/denial of request.
  • Review field trip requests to arrange transportation and maintain proper billing.
  • Coordinates with Cabinet and bus company about Student Accident reports and Break and Vandalism Reports.
  • Serves on Emergency Response Team and Enrollment Committees, and coordinates and communicates to both public and non-public for changes in schedule (PD Days, weather or emergency-related issues) Some early morning or late evening availability required during emergencies or for weather-related changes
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by the Chief Financial Officer

RECOMMENDED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma minimum
  • Experience with a transportation program is preferred
  • Computer literate, especially with Google Suite programs
  • Knowledge of Danbury's streets, roads, and routes to neighboring cities and towns
  • Experience working with students and must have sensitivity to student issues and concerns
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: The employee works in normal office conditions and is required to sit, talk, listen, stand, walk, stoop, and reach with hands and arms to access documents and files; the employee seldom lifts up to 10 pounds. The position has normal vision requirements. Equipment operated includes office machines, telephones, and computers.
