Description

Fall River Health Services is looking for an Infection Preventionist (IP) in Hot Springs, SD. This role is responsible for the facility infection prevention and control program (IPCP), by assuming direct responsibility for infection surveillance, infection reporting, and provision of infection prevention and control technical support and education for all Fall River Health Services (FRHS) staff.

Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for the development, management, education and evaluation of the Infection Prevention Control Program (IPCP) for FRHS.
  • Establish the IPCP as a facility-wide system for the prevention, identification, investigation and control of infections of patients/residents, staff, volunteers, visitors, and other individuals providing services under a contractual arrangement based upon the facility assessment and accepted national standards; including surveillance designed to identify possible communicable diseases or infections before they spread.
  • Maintain a system for reporting possible incidents of communicable diseases to local, state, or national agencies as required.
  • Oversee the antibiotic stewardship program and monitor patients/residents' antibiotic use.
  • Conduct an annual review of IPCP and update the program as necessary.
  • Assist with establishing the standard of care in infection prevention practices to protect patients, residents, staff, volunteers, visitors and contracted staff.
  • Maintain an infection control log utilizing CDC and APIC standards for determining types of infection.
  • Assess the need for, develop, implement and enforce written policies and procedures for infection prevention and control, including but not limited to:
  • A system of surveillance designed to identify when and whom to report incidents of communicable diseases or infections before they spread to other persons in the facility and the corrective actions taken by the facility;
  • Decide when and how isolation should be used for a patient/resident; Those for standard precautions and for transmission-based precautions, including when these should be used, the duration of use, and the type of precautions needed for a particular infection or organism.
  • Policies prohibiting staff with communicable diseases or infected skin lesions from direct contact with residents and their food, and enforce hand hygiene policies consistent with accepted standards of practices.
  • Review, monitor and update all Infection Control policies.
  • Follow all FRHS IPCP practices.
  • Serve as the FRHS IPCP spokesperson for federal, state and accreditation agencies.
  • Maintain current knowledge of federal, state and local regulations and ensure the facility leaders are informed of appropriate issues; understand and comply with infection control, safety, and OSHA procedures and regulations minimum qualifications.
  • Ensure FRHS is accreditation-ready at all times regarding Infection Control policies and procedures.
  • Assist in preparing and completing required reports and program reviews for local, state or federal agencies.
  • Serve as the Infection Control Workgroup Chairperson.
  • Support the function of the Infection Control Workgroup by collecting, reviewing, analyzing, interpreting and reporting infection control surveillance of patients/residents and personnel.
  • Serve as a member and reports to the Quality Assurance Committee and the Safety Workgroup.
  • Participate in review of quality indicator reports to verify accuracy of infection control data.
  • Collaborate with facility leadership, FRHS medical director, local, state and national agencies to develop, implement, and evaluate the annual infection prevention goals, action plan and activities related to such.
  • In collaboration with Department Management, ensure that staff. Adhere to CDC and facility policies and procedures regarding assessment to determine patients/residents at risk for infections and communicable diseases. Implement appropriate infection control measures.In partnership with Occupational Health and Safety Nurse, assess the need for, develop, present and document IPCP in-service education for individual departments, general orientation, and annual review as needed; education includes but is not limited to:
  • Hand hygiene
  • Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization
  • Specific direct and indirect care settings
  • Therapeutic and diagnostic procedures and devices
  • Use of isolation/barrier precautions when indicated
  • Patient/Resident placement, transfer, and discharge
  • Environmental hazards
  • Use of patient care products and medical equipment
  • Patient/Resident immunization programs
  • Enhance professional growth and development through participation in infectious disease and epidemiology continuing education programs, trainings, research, in-service meetings and workshops; shows responsibility for own professional practice and ongoing education and learning.
Requirements
  • Education, training, experience or degree in nursing (RN/LPN) preferred.
  • Education in Medical technology, microbiology, epidemiology, or other related medical field.
  • Minimum three years of clinical experience.
  • Certification or licensure from accrediting body or state agency pursuant to degree.
  • Nursing candidate must possess current, unencumbered professional nurse's license from the State of South Dakota.
  • Certification preferred in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) from the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology, Inc.
  • Completion of specialized training in infection prevention and control within 90-days required as specified by CMS. Course available from the CDC.
  • Previous knowledge of Environmental Services policy and procedure in addition to Infection Prevention.
