Responsibilities

JOB SUMMARY

Performs a variety of tasks in support of the daily workflow of the pharmacy to include the appropriate distribution of medications in compliance with state and federal laws and in accordance with FHS policies and procedures. Under the supervision of a pharmacist, technicians are accountable for 1) preparing and dispensing prescribed medications for patients, 2) performing compounding of medications, 3) assisting in managing inventory, 4) performing charging and crediting functions for medications associated with drug distribution processes, and 5) performing routine clerical/administrative tasks.

Incumbents are also accountable for: maintaining a clean and safe environment; using appropriate aseptic technique; handling controlled substances appropriately; completing all educational modules; attending regular staff meetings; keeping abreast of departmental changes/current FHS policy and procedures and The Joint Commission requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Prepares, distributes and delivers medications in accordance with FHS policies and procedures, The Joint Commission requirements, and Department of Health regulations.

  • Distributes medications accurately to the patient care areas via automated and non-automated distribution systems.

  • Compounds sterile products accurately using aseptic technique, coordinates the workflow of the sterile compounding area, and completes quality assurance tasks for the sterile compounding area.

  • Mixes compound ingredients for liquid products, suspensions, ointments, and other medication preparations, and maintains accurate documentation on labels and compounding logs.

  • Packages medications into unit-dose form for dispensing to patient care areas and maintains accurate documentation on packaging labels and logs.

  • Communicates effectively with co-workers and alerts the pharmacist to potential medication misadventure.

Performs clerical and administrative tasks in support of the day to day operations of the department.

  • Prioritizes and organizes daily work for optimal operations of pharmacy.

  • Performs data entry, and record keeping functions.

  • Enters required data into systems to ensure appropriate insurance billing.

  • Participates in the orientation and training of new technicians and students.

Maintains proper medication and supply stock levels.

  • Routinely stocks medication and supply areas and assists in ordering to maintain acceptable levels.

  • Updates quantities and expiration dates in automated distribution systems and insures expired medications are removed and disposed of appropriately.

  • Completes assigned unit inspections in a timely manner and documents results of inspection on proper forms.

Operates and maintains automated medication delivery systems and devices.

  • Performs all routine functions such as loading, refilling, removing, outdating, barcode scanning, and inventorying medications and runs reports for automated dispensing cabinets.

  • Performs all routine functions for the carousel system, including adding, removing, inventorying and outdating medications.

  • Investigates and seeks resolution to identified controlled substance discrepancies.

  • Performs general maintenance as required on pumps and other devices used in preparing medications for dispensing and assists in resolving equipment failures.

Participates in department quality assurance programs and maintains appropriate quality assurance documentation.

  • Maintains accurate documentation on packaging and compounding logs and sterile compounding area cleaning logs.

  • Responds to electronic refrigerator temperature monitoring system in a timely manner and documents response to temperature alerts.

  • Documents unit inspection results accurately and in a timely manner on unit inspection form.

  • Maintains accurate documentation of other activities as required.

Performs related duties as required.

Qualifications

Education/Work Experience Requirements

Graduation from an accredited Pharmacy Technician training program, and one year of hospital work experience or hospital rotation within an accredited training program that demonstrates attainment of the requisite job knowledge skills/abilities preferred.

Licensure/Certification

  • Current license as a Pharmacy Technician by the Washington State Board of Pharmacy.

  • Possession of a current Washington State Driver’s license required only for those staff with an “off site refill” assignment.

Pay Range

$23.32 - $36.07 /hour
