The Center for Excellence in Disabilities (CED) at West Virginia University Research Corporation is currently accepting applications for an Assistive Technology Specialist.

About the Opportunity

The purpose of this position is to provide assistive technology demonstrations, trainings, information referral, and electronic access to consumers to consumers, families, and service providers. The Specialist will also research policies, practices and procedures, which facilitate or impede the provision of AT devices or services; conduct outreach activities; collaborate with other agencies; seek additional funding sources to support the assistive technology program. The Specialist responds to inquiries and independently resolves matters of low to moderate complexity.

What you'll do:

  • Demonstrate a wide variety of assistive technology devices and services that address the needs of people with all types of disabilities; be able to explain their use in the context of everyday living, recreation/leisure, education, employment, etc.
  • Perform clinical evaluation of consumer's needs for assistive technology.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to program subcontractors, service providers, consumers, agency personnel and related groups regarding disabilities and assistive technology devices and services.
  • Set up exhibits and demonstrations at conferences, meetings and other venues. Make presentations to groups about assistive technology and related issues.
  • Conduct research for materials development and dissemination activities, create outreach materials (brochures/flyers/fact sheets) and produce basic information packets on specialized topics in alternate formats. Compile and keep current resource information on products, directions for use, maintenance and funding sources for such products/devices.
  • Respond to requests for information and/or appropriate referral to other agencies or businesses.
  • Serve as a liaison for collaboration with non-profit partners, community organizations and interagency committees and commissions.
  • Provide productivity and program reports to the Center's database manager and Program Manager, WVATS.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of experience working with individuals with varying disabilities or for/with organizations likely to serve individuals with disabilities or diverse populations which may include but not limited to hospitals, schools, social service and/or nonprofit agencies, veterans' organizations, or nursing homes.
  • Proficiency in using specialized hardware, software, peripherals and electronic communication systems.
  • Strong oral and writing skills with emphasized attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Ability to work efficiently and effectively with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one situations, small groups, and large groups of consumers and professionals.
  • Ability to rapidly learn academic, administrative and organizational policies and procedures within the affected work area and to interpret and apply these policies to unique work situations.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Knowledge of programs and services available to persons with disabilities.
  • Knowledge of computer equipment, including proficient use of personal computers and software applications.
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations that may not be available via public transportation. Travel may include overnight stays.
  • Knowledge of the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Rehabilitation Act and other laws pertaining to disability and assistive technologies.
