We also offer Refractive Cataract and Standard Cataract surgery at our in-house ambulatory surgery center. In addition, we also offer other refractive correction procedures including LASIK and PRK.

Position Summary

We are now hiring for an Surgical Technician/Ophthalmic technician that will support a high-volume ophthalmic practice that focuses on providing quality and compassionate care to each patient needing complete eye care services.

Responsibilities

This position requires customer service skills, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and a degree of independent decision-making.

• Obtaining supplies from other areas as needed
• Returning supplies and equipment to the appropriate location
• Assisting in keeping the Central Sterile area neat and orderly
• Effecting handling health or safety hazards for self and patients
• Reporting any unusual occurrences or incidents accurately to the Nurse Manager
• Performing other duties as required

This position is split between centralized sterilizing and OR needs. The Surgical Technician will function under the general supervision and direction the Nurse Manager to facilitate the safe and effective surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The Central Sterilization responsibilities include all aspects of sterile processing, decontamination, preparation, packaging, sterilization, sterile storage, and distribution of sterile medical devices according to the current AMMI and OSHA guidelines. Knowledge of AMMI/IAHCSMM documentation for sterile processes.

Ophthalmic skills include:
  • Obtaining and documenting patient history
  • Determining visual acuity
  • Performing automated and manual refraction for diagnostic purposes
  • Performing basic lensometry
  • Pupillary assessment
  • Visual field testing
  • PAM
  • Basic ocular motility assessment
  • Automated keratometry
  • Osmolarity testing
  • Administering eye drops, ointments, and irrigating solutions to the eye as ordered by physician
  • Performing office duties and clinical tasks - entering data into EMR, providing patient services
  • Measurement of intraocular pressure (tonometry)
  • Pre-operative preparation of patient
  • Maintaining equipment and instruments
  • Perform ocular imaging including OCT,
  • Topography
  • Post-operative education
Qualifications
  • 8+ years experience
  • Maintains current BLS certification and completion of required annual in-services
  • Ability to work in a surgery center environment with healthcare interactions that include patient contact, hazardous chemicals, and infectious disease under a moderate level of noise
  • Must be able to understand and follow instruction with speed and accuracy
  • Must be able to organize and set priority for work to be done
  • Possesses manual dexterity, mobility, visual acuity, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, attendance, and good interpersonal skills
  • Graduate from an accredited surgical technician and sterile processing program.
  • Completes required orientation as directed by facility.
  • Follows facility and OSHA safety rules and procedures while on assignment.
  • Follows facility protocol for unusual occurrences.
  • Respects cultural and religious practices of patients.
  • Upholds HIPPA regulations.
  • Punctual and dependable for assigned/confirmed shift.
  • Experience in ophthalmic surgical procedures.
  • Knowledge Alcon and Zeiss equipment preferred.
• 3-5 years of ophthalmic technician experience preferred

• COA preferred

• Dependable transportation required to travel to other offices as required

• Must be flexible with traveling to various locations

• Ability to pay attention to detail

• Ability to maintain confidentiality

• The ability to seek instruction in areas where he/she is not knowledgeable

• The ability to recognize inconsistencies

Education/Certifications:

• Graduation from an accredited high school
