Position Title: BUILDING SERVICES JOURNEYMAN ELECTRICIAN

Department: Maintenance

Reports To: Building Services Electrical / HVAC Foreman

JOB DEFINITION:

Under general supervision, the Building Services Journeyman Electrician performs skilled work as an electrician in the maintenance, construction and repair of district buildings and equipment. The majority of assignments require the performance of journeyman-level skills in the electrical trade. Responsible for the direction of Apprentice Electrician and other related Maintenance personnel. The Building Services Journeyman Electrician works under the supervision of the Building Services Electrical / HVAC Foreman or designee.

NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  1. Plans layouts, installs and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment.
  1. Plans new or modified installations to minimize waste of materials.
  1. Maintains consistency with specifications and state electrical codes.
  1. Prepares sketches showing location of wiring and equipment, or follows diagrams or blueprints prepared by others.
  1. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles and installs electrical conduit.
  1. Connects wiring to light fixtures and power equipment.
  1. Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, circuit-breakers, HVAC and motor control panels.
  1. Trouble-shoots fire, life and security panels.
  1. Makes appropriate tests of circuits to insure electrical compatibility and safety of all components using standard meters and instruments.
  1. Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustment, relocation or replacement.
  1. Repairs faulty equipment or systems and performs such other duties as may be assigned if within the usual scope of this employment.
  1. Assists the Electrical / HVAC Foreman in directing and coordinating the electrical functions of the District.
  1. Performs required electrical work as determined by work orders.
  1. Assists in the development of plans and specifications as well as interpret those plans and specifications already determined.
  1. Coordinates the maintenance and repair of equipment and tools.
  1. Assists in maintaining an inventory of materials, equipment, and tools necessary to accomplish various jobs assigned.
  1. Contributes to the smooth operation of the maintenance department by coordinating work with other maintenance personnel to arrange equipment use.
  1. Provides training for new personnel.
  1. Repairs district food service equipment.
  1. Maintains and repairs refrigeration/kitchen equipment in the district.
  1. Performs preventive maintenance on kitchen equipment.
  1. Maintains athletic field lighting systems, must be able to work from heights up to 100'.
  1. Fulfills other related duties as assigned.


WORKING CONDITIONS:

The employee frequently lifts materials and equipment weighing in excess of 50 pounds. The working conditions for this position are also associated with typical hazards encountered by employees in the electrical trades. In addition, employees are frequently required to climb ladders and work within crawl spaces. Therefore, safety precautions are a priority for this position.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:
  • Operation, methods, practices, materials, tools, equipment and terminology used in the electrical trade.
  • State and local electrical codes.
  • Rules, regulations, procedures, functions and policies of the district.
Skills and Abilities:

Possess the physical ability to regularly attend work and fulfill the essential functions of the position, with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Perform skilled repair and maintenance work in the electrical trade.
  • Read electrical schematics and prints.
  • Maintain preventative maintenance records.
  • Perform preventive maintenance duties.
  • Read, understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Work effectively without close supervision.
  • Retain at least a State of Oregon Limited Journeyman Manufacturing Plant license.
  • Possess a valid Oregon Driver's License and maintain an insurable status for automobile liability and coverage.
  • Apply an understanding of reading, spelling, arithmetic and other subjects as related to the position.
  • Write or print legibly.
  • Adhere to the district requirements for a drug-free workplace.
  • Maintain a high level of commitment to completion of all tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with students, district employees and the public in a pleasant, courteous manner.
  • Abide by confidentiality requirements.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalent. Show evidence of proper license and completion of recognized apprenticeship training. One to two years of successful employment as a licensed Manufacturing Plant Journeyman Electrician.

The position requires general knowledge of some technical procedures or work activity. The ability to learn School District practices or basic policies are necessary. Job proficiency can be acquired in six months to one year.

CERTIFICATION AND LICENSING:

Oregon Manufacturing Plant Journeyman license or General Journeyman license preferred.
  • Other Oregon Electrical Licenses will be considered with willingness to obtain Plant Journeyman license.
  • Must be enrolled in a licensed program within 6 months of hire, with completion of the program within four years from date of hire.
FIRE SYSTEM SPECIALTY:
  • Repair, replace, maintain and troubleshoot all district Fire Life safety systems.
  • Annually test fire flow switches and document per NFPA 72.
  • Perform annual cleaning of smoke and duct detectors.
  • Maintain battery back-up systems.
  • Possess minimum LEA and obtain Manufacturing Plant Journeyman Electrical License.
SECURITY SYSTEM SPECIALTY:
  • Repair, replace, maintain and troubleshoot all district security systems.
  • Maintain battery backup systems.
  • Ability to learn new systems and programs as necessary.
  • Possess minimum LEA and obtain Manufacturing Plant Journeyman Electrical License.
