Duties:
1. Demonstrates and applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques
2. Scrubs on general to moderately complex surgical procedures.
a. Kidney Transplant
b. Endovascular c. Carotid Endarterectomy Artery d. Robotic General Surgery Procedures e. Whipple Procedures f. Core specific intermediate skill level competency
3. Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs of the patient and surgeon.
4. Prepares the operating room by setting table, instruments and supplies according to type of surgery.
5. Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports needed repairs appropriately.
6. Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards and reports and corrects non-compliance.
7. Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments.
8. May assist RN in admitting, transferring and discharging patients in the OR.
9. May assist RN in positioning and prepping patients.
10. Maintains a safe and clean room environment; keeps room free from clutter, cleans and stocks rooms, returns equipment and
supplies to designated storage locations, helps maintain cleanliness of assigned areas.
11. Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
12. Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care.
13. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and communicates situation to appropriate people.
14. Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environment standards.
15. Actively participates in the shared governance/process to promote team practice.
16. Supports administrative and unit governance changes to job role and unit operations.
17. Participates in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression.
18. Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in on-going department specific educational programs.
19. Trains/precepts new employees in the Surgical Technologist I and II levels within core assignment.
20. Actively participates in audit monitors and department task forces.
21. Recognizes and participates in continuing education.
22. Performs other duties as assigned.

Education:
High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required
Graduate of CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technology program required.
Specific knowledge of surgical procedures within the operating room (OR), in addition to knowledge of surgical procedures, practices and techniques in providing patient care and assisting surgeons in the O.R.
Minimum of one year of experience as a Surgical Technologist or six months specialized patient care training in the armed forces required.

CERTIFICATIONS/LICENSURES:
Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date.
Surgical Technologist certification preferred.

Skills:
PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:
• Physical ability to lift and move patients
• Physical ability to push, pull and/or lift case carts, instrument trays and equipment.
• Works in a patient care area environment which may include exposure to communicable diseases,
unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, potential exposure to information, hazardous gases.
• Prolonged standing and walking.
