Job Title: Surgical Technologist II
Location: Clinton Township, MI 48038
Shift per week: 2- 8-hour and 2- 12-hour shifts Rotate 1 weekend, 12-hour shift for every 4 weeks
Length of Assignment: 5 months (possibility of extension)

Summary:
Duties:

  • Demonstrates and applies knowledge of advanced surgical techniques
  • Scrubs on general to moderately complex surgical procedures.
  • Kidney Transplant
  • Endovascular c. Carotid Endarterectomy Artery d. Robotic General Surgery Procedures e. Whipple Procedures f. Core specific intermediate skill level competency
  • Demonstrates critical thinking skills in relation to anticipating the perioperative needs of the patient and surgeon.
  • Prepares the operating room by setting table, instruments and supplies according to type of surgery.
  • Assures proper functioning of instruments and equipment prior to use and reports needed repairs appropriately.
  • Follows established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety, environmental and infection control standards and reports and corrects non-compliance.
  • Displays cost-consciousness in the opening of sterile supplies and in the care and handling of surgical instruments.
  • May assist RN in admitting, transferring and discharging patients in the OR.
  • May assist RN in positioning and prepping patients.
  • Maintains a safe and clean room environment; keeps room free from clutter, cleans and stocks rooms, returns equipment and
  • supplies to designated storage locations, helps maintain cleanliness of assigned areas.
  • Provides comfort and support for pre-operative patients by demonstrating sensitivity to patient's care and privacy.
  • Exhibits a higher level of collaboration with peers in making decisions related to surgical patient care.
  • Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures and communicates situation to appropriate people.
  • Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance program, safety, environment standards.
  • Actively participates in the shared governance/process to promote team practice.
  • Supports administrative and unit governance changes to job role and unit operations.
  • Participates in discussions with the Unit Manager/Supervisor regarding job enrichment and career progression.
  • Completes required education in a timely manner and participates in on-going department specific educational programs.
  • Trains/precepts new employees in the Surgical Technologist I and II levels within core assignment.
  • Actively participates in audit monitors and department task forces.
  • Recognizes and participates in continuing education.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Skills:

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Physical ability to lift and move patients
  • Physical ability to push, pull and/or lift case carts, instrument trays and equipment.
  • Works in a patient care area environment which may include exposure to communicable diseases,
  • unpleasant odors, acute patient conditions, potential exposure to information, hazardous gases.
  • Prolonged standing and walking.

Education:

  • High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent required
  • Graduate of CAAHEP accredited Surgical Technology program required.
  • Specific knowledge of surgical procedures within the operating room (OR), in addition to knowledge of surgical procedures, practices and techniques in providing patient care and assisting surgeons in the O.R.
  • Minimum of one year of experience as a Surgical Technologist or six months specialized patient care training in the armed forces required.

Certification & License:

  • Current BLS certification required or become BLS certified within one month of start date.
  • Surgical Technologist certification preferred.

Job Types: Full-time, Contract

Pay: $43.00 - $46.00 per hour
